AMBER HARGREEVES.                                                                                                                              present day.
"just about the way you're glimpsing at me, something about you makes me feel guilty for liking you when you're with him, this is a love song for a girl who'll never know it's about her."
DIEGO IS SITTING ON MY BED when I make my way into my bedroom. He unapologetically stares at me when I walk in, his gaze not leaving me for a second as I close the door behind myself, the room being just the two of us.
There's some kind of tension in the air as I ignore him, sitting by my vanity and pulling out the clothes and makeup I'd stolen from the store last night. When I look up to brush my hair, Diego is stood behind me in the mirror, still staring at me.
"Aren't you going to ask me why I'm here?" He asks as I'm turning music on my iPod, letting soft dance music play aloud.
"I thought you were just being a perv. Do you need something?"
"Why did you cover for me?"
"Hm?" I begin brushing my hair.
"Earlier. You said that you stole the monocle, why?"
I hesitate, biting down on my lip. I hadn't intended to cover for Diego until I started talking before I could even consider it, it just happened.
"I felt like I owed you, you sort of saved me yesterday."
"Don't get used to it." Diego pulls his jacket off, and I watch him in the mirror, looking at all of the gear and straps he had attached to his shirt by clips, all of his knives. "I save people, it's what I do."
"You're not a hero, Diego. You just happened to save me once."
"God, can't we talk like people for once?"
I put down my hairbrush, standing up from my chair. "Okay." I make my way over to the bed and sit in front of him, crossing my legs. "What do you need to talk about?"
"Um." Diego seems taken aback, and hesitates for a few seconds, watching me before he turns around to face me on the bed, also sitting down.
"You didn't owe me, by the way. I'd help anyone."
"But you helped me." I commented, staring at him in the eyes tiredly.
He just shakes his head. "How's your arm?"
I shrug. "I haven't removed the bandages. I don't want to look."
"You'll need to wash it soon."
"Yeah, yeah, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it."
"Okay."
The two of us sit in comfortable silence, listening to nothing but the music as we stare at one another, unsure of what to say. By the looks of it, neither of us had anything to say, but we also didn't want to move.
The more I look at Diego, the more I get the sense that something about Diego confuses me. He's so big, but so gentle. He's just so different from how I remember him, when we were kids.
"Hey," Diego glances at me for a few moments, and I nod my head. "Why did you marry that asshole?"
I let out a nervous chuckle through a breath. "I don't know, I love him. Loved, I loved him." I rub the back of my neck.
"Well, what now? I mean, you're just going to go back to him?"
"No, uhh..I've got to figure out what to do with myself now. Get a job, or something."
