SEVENTY-TWO
MUMUThursday,
7:40 pm
Dear, Diary
I finally spoke to mummy and Shaniqua via WhatsApp video call and I didn't realize how strange it would feel to be away from home for the first time in forever.
"I'll be praying for you," Mum said and I could tell that she somehow still believed that my condition was more spiritual than mental by the tone of her voice.
"Okay, mummy," I smiled back at her.
"Your boss," Shantel's face appeared in the blurry video, ", he's a very good man, Shaniqua. A very good man," I couldn't shake the feeling that she was sounding like she was recommending a product than actually appreciating a person.
"I know."
"Good. You better know," she smiled.
"I love you, sister," I said the words, and I could feel my insides screaming the words CRINGE at me, but they also knew it was true so, whatever.
"Ew! Don't ever say that again in your life...ew ew Ewww! I'll make a Vlog about this, people will lose their minds," she rolled on mum with laughter and I laughed at how mum kept throwing her the side-eye like she was beginning to doubt her daughter's sanity.
"Mumu," I heard myself say and I saw my mum smile while Shantel frowned.
"Who's Mumu? Ah, it's not your fault...Shebi you're chilling on the island bah? You'll still come back to the trenches where you belong—I want to see the mouth that you'll use to call me, Mumu again," I saw mum trying to hush her with words like "what is trenches?" And how none of her daughters are Mumu's in the name of Jesus. God, Bebi! I love them so much, I'm not even gonna lie.
The call ended when Shantel started wiggling her eyes at me as soon as Elvis was done wishing them goodnight.
"Mumu," I repeated and this time she only laughed.
