The shock of returning home and not finding her brother anywhere hadn't really hit Rosie yet. Part of her just felt like he was at the skate park seeing as he did go there when he felt alone. Honestly, she hadn't felt as if she'd been distant with him, but after thinking on it a bit more she resolved to make an effort with him.
It was true that he had let Damien and the others tag along which had to lead to Damien being killed, but Luke couldn't have foreseen that.
Recalling the recent events, Rosie began to realise how distant the others had been to him too. Of course Ava was still around him, but not as much as usual. Lucille had started the whole 'Avoid Luke' act. Then again, she was somewhat justified.
She sighed to herself and retrieved her phone from the back pocket located on her jeans, scrolled down her contacts until she found Luke's number and hit the call button. Putting the phone to her ear she laid back on the sofa and stretched out slightly. The phone didn't even ring once, it just lead her straight to voicemail, which surprised the girl slightly seeing as Luke's phone was never turned off nor did he travel in any areas where he wouldn't have service.
Shrugging her shoulders slightly, she grabbed the TV remote and turned the screen on, the bright light making her eyelids close halfway. She felt extremely exhausted and didn't mind the wave of sleep that rushed over her while she was barely five minutes into her favourite show. The worry of her brothers absence also disappearing as she entered the land of dreams.
==================================
Lucille had done her daily routine of locking herself in her room after getting home from school and crying into her pillow for seemingly hours. She managed to put up a brave face and act unaffected by her late friends passing in public, but when she was alone the floodgates opened and refused to shut.
About a week after Damien's passing, she had gone to his family home and explained what little she could to his cousin, Jackson.
Knowing that the truth would lead to more questions and her possibly getting locked away in some mental institute, she opted for a more realistic scene. She felt like the worst girl ever, openly lying through her teeth and telling her best friends cousin that he had got into a fight whilst trying to protect her in an alleyway and was ultimately stabbed by an unknown assailant.
Once pressed for details about where his body was and why she hadn't called an ambulance, she rectified the end of her story by adding that the culprit of the fake murder had chased her after dealing with Damien. She had ran and not gone back, leading to her being unaware to the bodys' whereabouts.
In truth, Damien's real death had been a slashing wound, similar to that of a blade. And the man who had really killed Damien was unknown to Lucille, however she still knew that she had left details of the real event out, this made her heart wrench with guilt.
Jackson had asked for time alone, repeating that he needed to let everything process in his head fully. Lucille was escorted to the door and hadn't heard from his family since.
Her silent sobbing came to a halt when her eyes rested on her desk, right where the framed photo of the 2021 Rainwood science fair, with her and Damien smiling and holding their entry project which earned second place at the fair.
Lucille wiped her eyes and took deep breaths, trying to recall the day in more detail...
==================================
The hot, burning September sun beamed down on the town of Rainwood, which was ironic given the towns name. The tarmac on the roads looked ready to melt. Several stands had been put up around the town selling lemonade and other refreshments to people walking in the unbearable heat.
