Thirty minutes before the tournament begins
Luke didn't know what he had expected, but it seemed that this tournament was vastly popular. He was crammed in a waiting room with over fifteen elves who were also taking part. He didn't see Damaeir anywhere, so he assumed there were even more contestants than the ones he could see.
Similar to what happened when his teachers announced mock exams, Luke felt a lump rise in his throat and his hands became sweaty. He wasn't oblivious to the stares he was receiving from the elves in the room either.
Brooke had left his side at the gate, not being allowed to sit in the waiting room with him. Instead, her and the others were all waiting in the stands to watch the tournament.
Several insecurities kept presenting themselves in Luke's head.
'Did I train enough?'
'Should I have tried elven magic like Kasper and Ava?'
'What exactly does Dralvir want to see from Adamas, and why?'
These thoughts plagued his head like a virus. It was inescapable, like a loud scream in his head that wouldn't stop echoing. He tried keeping his cool but his thoughts just got louder and louder.
It even drowned out the sound coming from the stadium beyond the waiting room, the cheers and cries faded into silence as Luke's thoughts overcame them.
The booming sound of Dralvir's voice erupted in the stadium, sounding so small in Luke's head.
"WELCOME EVERYONE, TO THE SEVENTY-SEVENTH LUNAR MOON TOURNAMENT!!"
More cheers and applause was heard from the stands in response to their tradition.
"This is truly a wonderful day. We have survived and prospered another moon cycle, and our tournament has returned to give us a new village leader. My reign as chief is at an end, tonight we will be lead by a new champion. It is my wish that you all welcome them with warm intent and a kind heart. Let the seventy-seventh Lunar Moon Tournament, BEGIN!!"
An ear splitting sound cracked through the air, followed up by a large ballad of music chorusing as the doors of the waiting rooms all opened and revealed the path into the stadium for the contestants.
The pounding of footsteps overrode Luke's harrowing thoughts and forced him to join them. The stadium itself was much larger than the tormenting Arena of Blood in which Luke obtained the electricity element. It had a flooring consisting of sand, while the surrounding walls that led up into the stands were high and offered no line of escape.
Opposite the doors his group entered the arena from, Luke spotted another group of elves, Damaeir amongst them. He was starting to get a horrible idea of what this tournament was going to consist of.
==================================
Up in the seating area, the girls and Kasper had all been avidly talking about the tournament and how it was done.
"So, Lily, why does your brother want to be village chief so bad?" Ruby questioned.
Lily put a finger to her chin thoughtfully while staring up at the sky. "I think he just loves our dad so much! And he wants to be a son that his father can be proud of."
"Since when were you so interested in my little brother?" Estel chimed in from the right of Kasper.
"Well, because he's in the tournament! I just wanna know what his motivations are."
"Speaking of motivations, I still don't know why Luke was so adamant on entering." Kasper added with a inquisitive stare down at his friend in the arena.
