***Trigger warning - rape***

Joan didn't understand why she had to hide when the guard came for an inspection. We were lucky because Dad was a councilman and a member of the Guard, so he always knew when we had the inspections.

He was very strict with us and always reminded us what would happen if Joan was found. I was scared that he'd be taken away from us and that Joan would be put in the skybox. She was only six and the rest were almost 18. She wouldn't last.

"Come on," Dad said. He walked to the back wall in the living room behind the couch, and he pulled a loose panel off the wall. Joan felt like crying as she was rushed into the crawl space. When the panel was secure again, Dad pulled the couch in front of it.

Joan didn't know it was for her own good. I barely understood it either. All I knew was that having more than one child was a crime. I didn't know why, or why the punishment was death. I didn't know what the consequences were for me, or if Joan would get pardoned on her 18th birthday.

The guards knocked on the door, and I immediately sat on the couch with schoolwork. I pretended I'd been working on it the entire time.

"Inspector Moore," Dad said when he opened the door. I didn't know why we had to go through the inspection. Dad was a respected councilman and member of the guard. Did Chancellor Sydney not trust him?

Inspector Moore walked into the room and looked down at me while the guards behind him inspected our quarters. "What are you working on?" he asked me.

Dad walked over and sat next to me. "Earth Skills," I told him, though he didn't buy it.

Moore looked at the assignment. "This is 3rd year Earth Skills. Aren't you a little young to be taking that class?" he asked me.

Dad spoke up. "Pike specifically asked for her in his class because she was always fascinated with learning about Earth."

Moore bit his lip and nodded. Every time he was here for an inspection, he never looked around and actually inspected the unit. He always tried to talk to me.

Moore was barely even 20 years of age, and he often was seen with Inspect Sullivan, also barely 20 years old. But they were quickly respected on the guard because of their fathers.

I looked down at my assignment. I never knew if he thought he could scare me into revealing something I shouldn't or if it was something else, but I tried to ignore Moore. But he kept speaking to me. Even Dad didn't like him, but I assumed it was for a different reason.

Like always, the guards left without finding anything. The next day, I was leaving my Earth Skills class and was on my way to Factory Station to visit a friend.

"Hey, Jules," Inspector Sullivan said from behind me. Was he following me? I slowly turned around to look at him and Inspector Moore. "I didn't expect to see you in Factory Station."

I tried to play it cool and said, "I was planning on hanging out with a friend today."

Sullivan and Moore stared me down, it felt like they were undressing me with their eyes. They took a step toward me, but I backed away. "My dad is a member of the guard and you know that."

They held their heads up high and in a stern voice, Moore said, "And you know that we have the authority to check your bag if we have reasonable suspicion." They took another step toward me, "And I think I smell something coming from in your bag. Turn around and place your hands on the wall."

I did as I was told. I was terrified when Moore unzipped my bag and started to empty it. We were alone in the hall, so no one was there to witness the accusation. "What's this?" Sullivan said. I turned around to see him pulling out a large bag of marijuana and a container of morphine.

"I--I didn't take that," I said through tears. "You put that there!" Sullivan put the drugs in the pocket of his uniform.

"Your dad will be pretty disappointed when he's talking to you through a glass window," Moore said. I shoved him away from me, but he was stronger. He forced my hands behind my back and shoved me into the wall. He was very close to me, and one of his hands ran down my side. "Of course, there is something you could do for us to forget this whole encounter."

"No!" I screamed. He put more pressure on my neck, and I could barely get a word out with my face pressed against the wall. Tears stained my cheeks as I tried to make myself heard, but no one saw what Moore was doing to me. Except for Sullivan, but he was letting this happen.

Moore hooked a finger in my waistband and tugged. "You better not tell your dad." I cried in fear. Moore held me down, and I wanted to fight. But he was armed and he was stronger. I let him have his way with me. It was painful, but every time I let out a scream, Moore went faster and harder.

When he finished, he threw me to the ground and just walked away with Sullivan. They didn't say anything to me. I was scared that if I spoke, he'd lie about the drugs he found.

I stayed curled up on the floor, barely conscious. Only minutes later did I hear yelling from down the hall.

"Get a stretcher!" a male voice yelled, followed by a bunch more people yelling. I didn't recognize any of the voices. I was hurried to medical and was seen immediately by Dr. Griffin. Nearly every other doctor that didn't have a patient rushed to my care.

A breathing mask was placed over my mouth and was feeding me oxygen. Dr. Griffin drew my blood, but that only led to more issues. She stared at the fluid in the syringe. "Eric, can you bring this to Dr. Allen and run some tests," Dr. Griffin asked him and handed him the container. She didn't know why my blood looked like that. It had been that way for as long as I could remember.

I spent hours in medical, and they didn't contact Dad until all the testing was done. When he saw me lying in the bed, he ran over to me. "What happened?" he asked Dr. Griffin.

Dr. Griffin explained to Dad that the new trainee, Eric Jackson, found me in Factory Station, but she lied saying she didn't know what happened to me, which I was thankful for. Then she said, "Her blood is discolored, so I would like to run experiments on her. It doesn't appear to be harmful to her."

Dad immediately shook his head. "You're not testing her. If it's not harmful, she doesn't need to be tested."

Dr. Griffin respected his wishes and left the two of us alone. I looked up at him and removed my breathing mask. "Inspector Moore," I said, but right away, I regretted speaking up. "He--" I didn't want to say it, but somehow, Dad knew. He always had a gut feeling that Moore would hurt me.

It wasn't until after I was discharged that I told the whole story, and just hours later, Dad had his arms around me as we stood by an airlock. Chancellor Sydney stood next to us and Commander Shumway stood by the panel.

Guards led Inspector Moore to the open airlock. "Christopher Moore, you have been found guilty of fraud and sexual assault against a minor," Chancellor Sydney said. Moore looked at me, and I immediately looked away from him. He walked into the airlock and Shumway closed the door. He kept staring at me, letting me know that I was the reason for his execution. When Sydney gave the order, Shumway opened the airlock, and Moore was thrown out into space. He was gone. But Sullivan still roamed the Ark knowing exactly what Moore did.

I didn't know what to say or do, I didn't know if I was still safe because of Inspector Sullivan.

Before walking away, Sydney said, "Moore was a respected member of the guard. Let this be a warning to anyone who thinks what he did was justifiable."
