"Pike's detail is still at it," Octavia said over the radio. "Soil and water samples."
"Any idea what they're up to?" Kane asked.
"No, but considering how heavily they're armed, I don't think they want anyone to find out." Octavia stopped talking, taking in a short breath. "Crap."
"What is it?" I asked. I was worried for her safety. She knew how to fight, and she kept up with her training with Lincoln. But she had gotten cocky, thinking she could take down anyone with how good she could fight. But three months of training wasn't much.
"There's a Grounder kid. Hang on."
Octavia's end went silent, contemplating her next move. "Octavia. Please respond," Kane said, but nothing was heard. "Octavia, are you there?" Kane lowered his voice, worried that we could be heard by someone.
"They're going after the kid. I'm trying to cut them off," Octavia said. Kane and I sat in silence, hoping Octavia would radio back to tell us anything.
"Chances are, they're collecting water and soil samples so they can grow crops," I said quietly. I heard footsteps outside the door, and I lowered my voice to avoid being heard. The door opened, and I breathed a sigh of relief when it was Anakin.
"I asked him to meet us here," Kane said. "I didn't want Pike to find a reason to arrest him." Anakin closed the door behind him. "Where's Joan."
"She's with Raven," Anakin said.
He sat down next to me, and just then, Octavia's voice could be heard. "Kane?"
"I'm here," he whispered. "You ok?"
"We need to find out what Pike is up to. Right now, whatever it is, they were willing to kill a kid to keep it quiet."
"We're on it. You stay safe." Kane turned off the radio.
"Dad," I said, capturing his attention. "If a kid was out there, that means that wherever they are, they are close to a village. Someone could get hurt."
Kane pulled something out of his pocket. "We're gonna get our answers." He was holding what looked like a bug. Something we could use to listen in on Pike's conversations. "Sinclair made it." We stood up, leaving the unit. Miller was right outside, waiting for us to get done talking to Octavia.
"Is she ok?" Miller asked.
"For now," I answered. "But we need to get into the chancellor's office now."
"I just saw Pike leaving, no one will be in there," Miller assured us.
Miller followed us down the hall to the chancellor's office. We hoped no one was inside, it would make it so much more complicated if Pike was in there. "You step aside, in case someone answers," Kane told the three of us.
"I told you, no one's home," Miller repeated. Kane knocked on the door while Miller, Anakin, and I stepped off to the side. Miller sighed, and his sigh turned into a low giggle.
"What?" Kane asked.
"Bet you didn't think we'd break the law together when you arrested me on the Ark, huh?" Miller laughed.
Kane grabbed the front of Miller's shirt. "This isn't a game, Nate. If we don't find out what Pike's up to, more people will die."
"Then let's not get caught," Miller said. Kane started putting in the code. I wasn't sure if he knew the code or found a way to hack into it, but whatever he put in worked and the door popped open.
