I wasn't sure how long we were in the cell, but I couldn't sleep. I was scared that if I slept, a guard would come in and hurt one of the sick Grounders.
Kyda was doing much better than she was before, but Denae still looked miserable.
"Ste yuj(Be strong)," I kept repeating to myself. Every time I spoke out loud, it was never in English. Everyone in here knew enough Trig to know what I was saying.
No one would've expected the great Skaiplana to be on death row, but here I was awaiting my execution. Someone probably already told Joan and she was probably working on a plan that wouldn't work.
I placed my hands in my pocket, but I felt something unfamiliar. I slowly pulled it out revealing the chip. I still had it, and Jaha's chip maker had been confiscated. I had one.
I thought about Jaha's friend, Otan. Otan was killed and was in the City of Light, just like everyone else. If I was going to be dead in the morning, I could take the chip. My mind would still be alive. I slowly brought it up to my mouth, scared about any of the effects it would have on me.
Kane watched me slip it into my mouth, and right away, he was at my side. "Spit it out," he demanded. I looked up at him scared. He grabbed my jaw and forced my mouth open. I spit it out and looked at Kane with anger. "I'm not letting you do that."
"Why? I'm going to be dead in a few hours. I would at least like to feel free beforehand."
Kane lowered his voice. "Oso na nou ste don put daun(We aren't being executed)," he said. "Oso na hon op edei auda dison. Oso dula ogeda taim(We'll find a way out of this. We always do)."
I looked up at Lincoln as he stood at the locked door, staring into the hall. He had been going around to everyone in lockup, telling them to be strong.
Lincoln saw me on the verge of giving up many times, and this time was no different. He knelt down in front of me and said, "Ste yuj, Skaiplana. Kainripa na nou teik yu set daun, en nida ai na(Be strong, Sky Queen. Mercy Killer wouldn't let you give up, and neither will I)." Lincoln placed a hand on my shoulder. "Yu gada uf in kom Eisou kom Ouskejon Kru. Em ste sis yu au, en em na shil yu op(You have the strength of Esau of the Blue Cliff. He's guiding you, and he'll protect you)."
I smiled and reached up to hold his hand. "Mochof, Blodi(Thank you, brother)."
Lincoln stood up. "You inspire them," Kane said. Lincoln gave a soft chuckle and sat between me and Kane.
"I'm not letting Jules give up," Lincoln told Kane. "I'm not gonna let you give up either." Kane smiled at Lincoln. Every time my mind entered a dark place, Lincoln always was there with me and pulled me out of it.
"Chancellor on deck," a guard said, and Pike appeared at the door with Bellamy.
"Thought we had more time," Kane said. We stood up, thinking Pike was ready to drag us to our deaths.
"I'm not here for you," Pike said. He scanned the lockup, looking at each imprisoned Grounder. "Each of you is guilty of the same crimes as Kane and Jules, and as such, you will share the same fate. Death."
"Chit em ste biyo(What is he saying)?" Kyda asked.
"Nou get yu daun(Don't worry)," Lincoln said. He approached Pike and said, "My people are innocent. They know nothing. Don't let them suffer for my crimes. Please."
"Sir, Lincoln's right," Bellamy said. "All the others did was run through an open door. Same thing we would do if we were in there."
Pike stepped closer to the bars, staring at Lincoln. He looked briefly at the Grounders behind him and said, "I believe that's true. Kane, Lincoln, Sinclair, and Jules... as the leaders of this coup, you will pay for your crimes with your lives. Execution is set for dawn."
