Eight

When Morpheus woke up, the two of us met with Lucienne in the throne room again.

He sat on the rubble of broken stairs, placing his arms above his knees, while we stood around him.

"There is only one sure way for me to find my tools. I must summon the Three-In-One." Morpheus shared with us his concluded thought.

"You can't be serious." I said, furrowing my brows as I looked at him.

Lucienne looked skeptical as well. "Surely it hasn't come to that."

But Morpheus seemed serious enough. "The Fates see past, present and future, and they know all."

"Yes, but they speak in riddles. They never tell you what you want to know, only things you should never know." Lucienne argued.

She looked at me then. And I looked away before Morpheus could notice.

I hated being affected by a bad memory regarding the subject of any conversation. I also hate reliving something that brings extreme unpleasantness upon me.

Lucienne progresses to Morpheus. "Perhaps just this once you could ask one of your siblings for help. Destiny would surely know where your tools are, or Desire..."

"My siblings have their own realms to attend to, I have mine. We do not interfere in each other's affairs." Morpheus answered quickly.

I shook my head. "You may not but some of them certainly do. I won't name them, fear not."

"Perhaps just this once you could tell them what happened to you." Lucienne suggested.

Morpheus took a while before answering. "I am quite sure they know what happened to me."

Lucienne looked down and I sat close to Morpheus before he looked at me.

"And not one of them came to my aid."

It rendered us silent for a while, right after seeing and hearing melancholy radiating from him as he shared his sentiment about his siblings.

Morpheus continued. "Fortunately for me, I have Katrien by my side."

At that, my heart skipped a beat. "You will always have me by your side." I smiled to comfort him. "But The Fates aren't cheap, you know."

Lucienne nodded. "They cost a bloody fortune."

Morpheus nodded after contemplating it for a second. "And at present, I cannot muster power enough to summon them, let alone pay that cost."

Lucienne and I looked down, not knowing what to answer.

"Unless..." Morpheus spoke again. "Is there anything of mine that remains in The Dreaming? Something I created?"

Lucienne looked around in confusion. "You created all of this."

"No," Morpheus shook his head. "Something that remains intact. That might retain some fragment of my power within it."

I raised a hand then pointed to myself when they looked at me.

"Not you, Katrien. I did not create you. You were already existing before I altered your existence."

"Be specific, then."

"Something I can absorb."

"There is one thing." Lucienne said, sharing a meaningful look with me.

The three of us agreed to travel to the corner of The Dreaming where two remaining residents of the realm stayed like Lucienne and I.
