Twenty Two

Morpheus held my hand the whole time we were walking.

Death led us to this path of wooden bridge after we left Harry's house.

"I thought he was sweet. Don't you?" Death said, talking about Harry, breaking the silence between us.

"He was." I agreed.

"Sweet? I don't know," Morpheus said, fiddling with my fingers. "Perhaps."

"Perhaps." Death chuckled, looking at me as she mimicked her brother.

"My sister," Morpheus called. "When I was captured, it wasn't me they were looking for. It was you."

Death heaved a sigh as we all stopped walking. "Yeah, I know. I'm sorry it happened and I've done nothing to aid you."

Morpheus nodded. "I wasn't on my own, then, anyway. Kat was with me." He looked back, smiling at me.

"Always." I said, making Death smile too.

"Aren't you two a pretty sight," She said. "Thank you for being there for my brother when we can't, Katrien." She took hold of my hand and did not let it go as she relied on me for balance when she started removing her shoes.

"What are you doing?" Morpheus asked.

"I'm taking my shoes off. You should take yours off too. It's good to touch the Earth with your bare feet. It's grounding." She stood back up once she removed her shoes completely.

"Don't mind if I do," I said, taking my shoes off as well. "What? It's grounding." I chuckled as I quoted Death when Morpheus looked at me with questioning eyes.

Death looked delighted, on the other hand. "Come on, I don't wanna miss the next one."

"You never cease to amaze me, my dream." Morpheus said, stealing my shoes from my hands to hold it instead.

"I'd say the same about you, my Lord." I grinned and clung my arm to his as we followed his sister on that grassy field below the bridge, next to a lake.

The field was full of people clearly enjoying a good time under the sun with their loved ones.

"Hi, Sam." Death approached the man walking away from the water.

"Oh," The man halted and greeted Death back, chuckling a little. "Hi. I'm sorry. Do I know you?"

Death stared at him for a mere moment, showing him who she is. It was all it took for Sam to realize what was going on.

He looked taken aback as he gazed upon the river. "Oh, no. No, no. I need to talk to my wife for, like, one second."

"Sam..."

"You don't understand. All our flight information is on my phone. I just need to give her the code." He went on to recite it after.

Death shook her head. "I'm so sorry, Sam."

"But we're on our honeymoon."

"Your time is up."

"Sam?" The woman behind him started calling as if she had heard his voice out of nowhere. She rose from her seat and looked over the river, searching for him with her eyes before walking toward it, standing next to his soul without knowing. "Sam?"

I assume she was his wife.

Death decided to spare Sam more agony by lending out a hand for him to take. And he did, after taking a final glance from his poor widow.
