WHEN THE PAST COMES TO JUMPSTREET

CHAPTER 40: MIDNIGHT

The kids had been playing with the kitty. Throwing the mouse, and the other mouse toy Tommy picked out, the kitty would chase it, they would chase the kitty.  Tom was behind Sydney, with his arms around her waist.  She was leaning back against him.  He said, "This has been a perfect day Syd."  She said, "I know. I'm so happy Tommy,"   Tom said, "me too, although it's kind of hard, I mean my feelings got hurt, but I'll be a man and tough it out."  She turned and faced him.  She said, "so how did I hurt your feelings?"  Tom said, "Which time?"  Sydney laughed.  He grinned.  She said, "I hurt you two times huh?"  He said, 'yes ma'am. I mean you didn't even care that a girl was hitting on me in the store. And then you said I could sweet talk the woman if she owned the cat" Sydney laughed.  So did Tom.

Sydney said, "I actually wanted to beat the crap out of that woman"   Tom said, "Good."  She said, 'I'm going to go fix lunch."  Tom said, "you want help" Sydney said, 'No you go play with the kids."  Tom said, "ok."  he kissed her.  She went into the kitchen.

Sydney fixed grilled cheese sandwiches, Tator tots, and apple sauce.  Sydney went into the living room.  She said, "ok kids, let's come eat lunch" They all 3 said "mommy we are playing with kitty" Sydney said, "I know that, but you can take a break from playing. Come on now" They ran into the kitchen.  The cat ran after them.  Sydney said, "I will feed kitty so he can eat too" Sydney said, "While we are eating, I want to talk to you about some new rules" They looked.  She said, "kitties and puppies don't know any better, so when they see a door open, they will run out. We need to be really careful when we go outside ok" They said "ok" Sydney said, "so I mean that means when Judy comes over, we can't just open the door, we have to make sure the kitty is put up. We have to get used to doing that ok."  They said, "ok mommy but what will we put kitty up"  

Sydney said, "Well I can put him in the bedroom" Tom said, "Sydney you know what. We should have looked for a cage."  Tommy said, 'A cage."  Tom said, "yeah son, not a big one, but one to put the kitty in, when we need to answer the door."  Sydney said, "shoot we should have I didn't even think about it."  Tom said, "either did I. Well, I will go back," Madison said, "mommy can we go with daddy" Sydney said, "that's up to daddy" Tom said, "it's fine with me, if you are ok with me taking them."  Sydney said, "it's fine. one condition kids."

They looked at Sydney.  She said, "I want you to be very good for daddy. I want you to make sure daddy carries you and holds one of your hands. Don't run ahead, don't let go of his hand, at any time.  Same rules apply as if you were with me, and you all 3 know what those are right" They said, "yes mommy"

Sydney said, "So have you thought up a name yet?"  Madison said, "no mommy we don't know what to call him" Sydney said, 'Tom you have any name?"  Tom said, 'well how about we pick one that fits his color I mean he's black and white so."  Sydney said, 'how about Midnight" The kids said, "Midnight Hanson" Madison said, "Daddy do you like that name?"  Tom said, "I love it"

The kids all went to the bathroom.  Sydney said, "Tom if you don't want to take all 3" He said, 'No it's ok. I can handle it. Unless you'd rather. I mean if you're going to worry."  Sydney said, "no I trust you. I'm sorry. I don't mean to worry. But just please don't let go of their hand, not even for a minute in the store."  Tom said, "Sydney I never would. Trust me baby. I'm a cop. I know all the " Sydney said, "I know of course you do. Tom said, "Sydney if you want the kids to stay home with you, I'll tell them."  Sydney said, 'No it's fine. I'm thrilled the girls aren't pretending they don't love you and aren't mad at you."  He said, "me too." They came running out.

Tom said, "you ready" They said, 'yes."  Tommy said, 'Mommy don't you want to come?"  Sydney said, "No I think I'll stay home with Midnight" Tommy said, "I guess I will stay home daddy."  Sydney said, 'Why honey don't you want to go?"  Tommy said, 'yes I do, but momma then you will be home alone" Sydney said, 'you're sweet baby. I love you. But I'll be fine. I am going to have Midnight to keep me company.  I think he is probably ready for a nap, me too."  Sydney said, "Kids do what daddy says, and do not let go of his hand, not in the store, do not run ahead, if you do, he will tell me, and you will all be put in time out."  Tommy said, "We won't mommy" Sydney said, "Good cause if you do, you won't be able to go again."  Madison said, "We will be good mommy" She hugged her.  So did Morgan, then Tommy.  They all told the kitty bye.  They left.
