Rory, the night of/day after
I don't know how long I had been asleep, but it was nighttime now. My movement woke up Carl.
"Where's mom?" I look around and spot her and Shane standing off to the side at the road rail.
"C'mon." I unbuckle my seatbelt, he does the same and we get out of the car and walk over to them.
"What's going on." Looking around I see a bunch of cars. They were packed against each other, I was surprised that me and Carl had even gotten out.
"We don't know, been here a while." Shane shrugs. I sigh and drape my hand over Carl's shoulder.
"Did you bring any food?"
"Yeah, back of the jeep," I mutter thanks and leave Carl with them and walk to the jeep. Tonight was a chilly one, so I grabbed Rick's jacket and pull it over me before I get some food.
I was craving something salty, so I grabbed a thing of sweet and salty trail mix. I grab one for Carl and make my way back to Lori and Shane, only to see that Carl isn't with them anymore.
"Where's Carl?"
"He's over there, playing with a little girl." Lori points to a truck, where I see Carl and a girl playing cards.
"Ok." I walk over to them, handing Carl the trail mix packet.
"Thanks, Rory!" He gives me a huge smile and opens it, He offers some to the little girl, which she takes some of.
"Rory, this is Sofia. She's here with her mom and dad." Carl places a card down in the pile. I lean against the car and watched them.
Carl was smiling a little bit, which was good. A short grey-haired woman walked from the side.
"Oh, hello. I'm Sofia's mom, Carol."
"Aurora, Carl's aunt."
"I thought you were his sister, you seem young."
"I'm only 16." I run my hands through Carl's hair. I continue talking with Carol and Sofia when a loud sound cuts us off.
I look up to see multiple jets flying over us and to Atlanta. "Stay here," I tell Carl and run to find Lori and Shane.
"What's going on?"
"I don't know!" We begin running through the trees when we come across a clearing. I watch in horror as they drop bombs and Atlanta goes up in flames.
"Oh god, I think I'm gonna be sick." I place a hand against a tree and the other one on my knee as the contents of my stomach come up.
"Shit, Shane I'm gonna take her back up." Lori holds my hair and pats my back as I finish up. I groan and wipe my mouth. Lori walks back up to the cars with me, seeing that Carl stayed where I told him to.
"I'm ok Lori, I'm fine." I brush her off and make my way to the car. Sitting in the front seat I lean my head against the window and take deep breaths.
I waited there until Shane decided it was a good idea to leave. So we decided to go to a campsite just a couple of miles away.
By the time we got there, the sun was rising already. It had to be around 5 am now. I would be waking up to get ready for school now, but I don't think school is an option anymore.
I get out of the car, seeing that some other people also came up here. Carl smiles as he sees Sofia step out of her car and runs towards her.
I was just really tired and wanted to sleep right now. My back hurt, my head hurt, and I was thirsty.
"Rory." I turn to Lori and see her holding something out to me. "Take it over there, when you're done come back." She points over to a picnic table. I take the stuff and drop it over there. I turn and walk back to Lori to receive another pile of things.
I drop that to the ground and sit at the picnic table. I yawn and place my head against the cold wood. I hear some chatter behind me before it's right next to me. I look to the side and see Carl and Sofia. They're coloring.
"Rory, are you ok?"
"I'm fine bud, just tired from everything." I wave my hand, trying to get my point across. I lift my head and look around. Shane and Lori were talking to a group of people.
After a couple of minutes they disperse, Shane and Lori make their way over here. "Let's set up tents and stuff." I grab my tent and start to set it up, with the help of Carl.
I've always had my tent when camping, it was just a small one, for two or three people I'm pretty sure. I place all my stuff in the corner before grabbing my sleeping bag and pillow. I put those on the ground before walking back out.
"I think I'm gonna lay down." before anyone can say anything, I walk back into my tent and zip it up.
The next chapter is the present day, which is a month or two later.
