I came out of the prefect's room to go home. Mehansa didn't come to me as usual so I was impatiently waiting for her to come. Today Sahesh did not come to school and Akindu had gone home with Hiruka. Mehansa did not come for fifteen minutes. Pasan ayya closed the door of the prefect's room and left, and I stood there alone and watched.

When she didn't arrive in another fifteen minutes, I started walking toward her classroom. Seeing a group of boys forming a circle in the middle of the netball court, I went there to find out what it was. After that, my eyes met Mehansa, who was in the middle of them with her hands folded and her eyes fixed on the ground. Her head was on the floor and I heard the boys saying something and laughing loudly. I immediately put my bag aside and ran towards where they were.

'What is this?' When I asked sternly, all the boys turned to look at me. Mehansa also raised her head and her eyes showed helplessness.

'There he is!' A boy said loudly and the children started laughing again. I recognized him as soon as I looked at him. He was the only child of a prominent minister of the country. I knew him well as he had been involved in countless fights before.

I went through the boys and pulled Mehansa by the arm and pulled her behind me. Mehansa hung on my arm and hid behind me.

'What happened here?' The boys looked at each other and took cues when I asked again sternly.

'Do you know that your innocent baby sister is a slut?' When one of the boys asked, I felt my blood heat up in my stomach.

I reached out and tried to hit him but Mehansa grabbed my arm and pulled me back. When I looked at her, she muttered the two words "don't fight" on her lips.

'I won't beat you this time. But watch your mouth! Whoever the father is, you have no right to say such a word to my sister. Remember that.'

The boy rolled his eyes when I said harshly. 'I don't have anything to do about your father not having a acceptable position like my dad. But keep in your mind that your innocent sister is a bitch in her heat.'

I clenched my fists as anger showed on my face. Mehansa squeezed my hand tightly to prevent me from jumping forward and hitting the boys. The boys were about to leave, laughing loudly. As they left, the minister's son bent down wide and ran his hand up and down one of Mehansa's legs. It was the last limit of my patience and I jumped towards him but Mehansa hugged me.

'Don't fight... please...' she muttered, pressing her head against my stomach and I looked at the boys, exasperated.

I was very angry that they had done so much to Mehansa and she had not told me anything. Besides, I was angry that she was silent enough to not do anything against them, but it was the anger towards them that defeated all that.

Mehansa was hugging me tightly with her eyes closed. I placed my hands on her shoulders and removed her from my body. After that, I grabbed Mehansa's wrist tightly and dragged her out of the school gate with the intention of going home soon.

Throughout the bus ride, Mehansa was squeezing my hand tightly as if she was afraid that I would leave her. I folded my hands. Unable to release the anger, tears were trying to come from the corners of my eyes. As soon as I reached home, I took Mehansa's hand and took her to her room with the intention of solving the problem.

'What does that mean!' I asked in a low voice, removing her school bag from her mouth and throwing it on the bed.

Mehansa was still looking down. Her silence made me even more angry.

'Mehansa! Why the fuck you didn't really open your mouth and say no to those boys! Why didn't you at least tell me!' Tears began to flow from my eyes when she became more silent.

'You...!'

'What do you think that you can do about it?' Mehansa shouted back startling me. She hadn't called me out loud in a long time.

'Do you think everything is fine when you come and start a fight! How many things you don't know! Do you at least know that I'm going crazy in this house? Are you trying to blame me for not telling you things for fear of starting a fight? You heartless...'

Mehansa fell to the ground. At one point phlegm came out of her mouth with a severe cough. I knelt down next to her and started rubbing her back. Mehansa looked at me with teary eyes covering her nose with her hand. Blood dripped from her fingers.

I was upset. Knowing that it was unhealthy to even talk to her so fast, I was deeply disappointed at my foolishness. I took the handkerchief from my pocket and wiped her mouth with it after she stopped coughing.

After cleaning her face, she started breathing fast, so I took her and leaned her on the corner of the bed and started the ventilator. Mehansa breathed heavily. Although it took longer than usual, I felt relieved after she calmed down. She immediately hugged my body and put her head on my shoulder and closed her eyes.

'Babe... sorry...' I said, she squeezed my hand tightly with one hand.

'I... will die..' When she was about to wept, I gently patted her back to calm her down.

Running my fingers through Mehansa's hair, I let the sweat from her head soak into my hands. Both of us were drenched in sweat as we didn't even remember to turn on the fan.

'They... they...' she said that and fell silent.

I heard.

After holding her for almost two hours, I finally stood up.

'I will go...'

She leaned against the wall and nodded. I left the room and came to my room. After getting clean I took the phone and checked to see if there was a message from Sahesh.

There were only four text messages from him.

Sahesh : Miniru I didn't come to school today. Send me the notes.

Sahesh : Our mother is a little sick. I am here to help mom. The person who works at home has not come.

Sahesh : If Pasan ayya ask about me, tell him that I'm sick.

Sahesh : 🙂

Miniru: 🙂 x 100

I threw the phone aside, took out my books and started working. The thought of what Mehansa would do was stuck in the corner of my mind but I didn't feel the need to embarrass her again. I knew from experience that complaining to the teachers about those boys was useless. Countless times they had been released without punishment even for their previous mistakes. I'm sure saying it won't go down well because it's hard to believe that a sixteen-year-old boy did such a despicable act as grabbing Mehansa's leg.

I let out a long sigh and buried my head between the books.
