We both lay in bed at night and stared at the roof. I slowly let my hand tangle between his fingers. Shanalka said nothing and gently held my fingers, letting out a long sigh.
'Shanalka...' I raised my voice after a while.
'Hmm?'
I swallowed hard, thinking twice about what I was going to ask next. 'your mother...'
'So?' He asked when I remained silent.
'She's not Yeheni's mother, is she?'
Suddenly, the eerie silence that spread in the room made me wonder if I had asked an inappropriate question.
'How many things have you seen, Miniru?' Shanalka asked calmly, not changing his grip on my fingers.
'I saw a lot of things I shouldn't see..' I replied, closing my eyes tightly.
'I want to talk to Yeheni...' Shanalka got up from the bed after a while.
I grabbed his hand and stopped him. 'She told me not to tell you..'
He looked at me with soft eyes. After a few seconds, he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips to mine as his hand cupped the back of my neck.
I felt the caress of Shanalka's fangs on my lips. As I tried to kiss the respondent he stopped the kiss by placing his lips on my forehead.
'Miru...' he called me softly.
Miru was the nickname he gave me.
'why?'
'I... you lost Mehansa and I can't lose Yeheni. She worth more than anything to me.'
I felt something stuck in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut to avoid hitting Mehansa on the head. Shanalka was touching my head as I started to wet his chest with my tears.
'That's...' he muttered softly again as I pulled my nose up. 'Shall we go see Nangi?'
I nodded and took a tissue paper from a nearby tissue box and wiped my eyes. I watched helplessly as Mehansa's smile appeared in my mind.
Shanalka laid me down on the bed and lay beside me and cuddled me, stroking my head gently.
'What if Yeheni is watching us?' he patted me on the back as I muttered.
'No I guess she is not. She is probably sleeping right now.' His voice had changed, showing that he too was skeptical about it.
I understood why Shanalka never started a relationship. He had no time to spare for two. But now I am an unnecessary burden in his life.
I remembered Mehansa. I thought that maybe if I had only thought of Mehansa and not Sahesh, I could have saved her. Feeling the tightness in my throat again, I swallowed a lump of saliva to stop it from coming out.
Shanalka's feet were intertwined with mine. He was warm. He had the kind of warmth and strange aroma I craved, and his warm kisses brought me a sense of security and love.
'Miru... I said about Mehansa... not on purpose... but... to me both she and Yeheni are the same. I don't know about Mehansa. But I see them both as one. I don't want to... lose my nangi even by mistake. Too many things happened to her. She holds it all without even crying. I am afraid that one day she will release all those sorrows in one place....'
He was silent.
'By killing herself.' After about a minute he awkwardly completed his sentence.
I said nothing and pressed my head on his shoulder and lightly bit his neck.
Shanalka smiled and took my face in her hands and started kissing me gently. I feel his fangs brush against my lips. I liked it. He reached under my shirt and pulled me closer to his body by my waist, even choking me for breath.
Our physical contact, which did not go beyond kissing or holding hands, brought me comfort. I didn't need a rushed relationship and he understood that and gave me the time and space I needed to heal.
Shanalka slowly brought his lips to my Adam's apple. The warm caress of his strong arms spread all over my body. I stretched my neck and made space for him to kiss my neck.
Kissing up to my shoulder, he left my body again like nothing happened before.
'Enough for today.' He sighed.
I smiled. 'Enough for today.'
'I'm not sure whether Yeheni is awake and listening to us at the door.' He joked and I laughed.
The silence between us was suddenly broken by a scream from downstairs. Shanalka jumped out of bed and switched on the light bulb in the room.
Before he could do anything else, it was Yeheni who broke the door and entered the room.
I froze for a moment and looked at her. After a few seconds it became clear to me that her entire face was covered in blood.
'Nangi!' Shanalka yelled.
Yeheni said nothing and limply leaned against Shanalka's body.
'What happened... God...'
'Let's go to the hospital!' I screamed because I couldn't think of anything to do.
Even though I was unconscious, Shanalka came to his senses by what I said. He looked at me.
'Take Nangi and come down. I will take the car...'
Although it was clear to me that it was past midnight, I picked up Yeheni in my arms without saying anything.
Shanalka had disappeared downstairs and I picked up Yeheni, who fell to my hands as she was dead, and started searching for the stairs like a blind man.
When I heard the sound of Shanalka starting the car, I saw Shanalka's wallet in the corner. Although there was no reason, I also took it between my fingers and carefully descended the stairs and reached the ground floor.
I can feel my clothes clinging to my body, soaked in Yeheni's blood. Covering her nose with her hands, she breathed too fast to tell if she was crying or not.
Before I could even imagine what had happened, I opened the back door of the vehicle that had been started and jumped into the vehicle.
Shanalka started driving frantically and hearing Yeheni's irregular breathing made me nervous.
'nangi what happened!' Shanalka shouted from the front seat.
I could see in the light of the street lamps that Yeheni's haggard eyes were gloomy.
She took one look at me. 'I.. Fe..' I realized she was taking a long sigh to complete her sentence.
'fell.'
As soon as the words left her mouth, her eyes closed and her rapid and irregular breathing stopped.
