'How many things are you hiding from me?' I asked handing Mehansa the report book in my hand. She just looked down and said nothing.
'First some school boys... now marks?' I lay on the bed so that her face was directly on mine.
Mehansa lay down next to me. We both looked at the ceiling of the room in silence. It was very rare for us to be alone in the big house.
'Don't bring Sahesh ayya home again.' I spat when Mehansa suddenly said.
'why is that?'
She didn't say anything. I got up from my lying position and looked at her. 'why is that?'
Mehansa lifted her head and looked straight into my eyes like never before. 'Don't ask why. I don't like him.'
'What can I do about you not liking him?' I raised my voice against her.
I saw Mehansa's mouth tightly shut. Her face showed that she didn't need to say anything. Mehansa got up from the bed and pulled down her shirt. 'Do whatever you want. If he comes again, don't ask me to come to downstairs. I won't face him again.'
I looked at Mehansa in surprise. It surprised me to speak so many words at once and speak against something for the first time. 'What's the big deal with that?'
Mehansa left the room without answering, provoking my anger. I remembered that we have to go to Sandaruvani akka's house tomorrow afternoon. I went downstairs to find something to eat. As I was leaving, the door of the house opened and father and the other entered the house. I watched the two of them kiss with some distaste. I could confirm at any time that they were not in love and only had a relationship based on sex and money.
'Miniru... make tea for both of us.' Dad placed his bag on the table and ordered me. I put the kettle on without saying anything.
Seeing that the bottle of Nutella in the fridge was half used up, I wrote Nutella in the corner of my to-do list for next season. Nutella was Mehansa's favorite food.
I couldn't understand what anger she had with Sahesh. Although it was true that he had asked her out, I saw that they were fine for a few days afterwards. I couldn't figure out what was the sudden change. I sat on a chair until the water boiled and nibbled on a piece of biscuit, then made four teas for myself and Mehansa.
After placing two cups of tea on the teapot in the living room, I took Mehansa's tea and mine and went upstairs and knocked on her door. 'Nangi...'
'Come...' I heard Mehansa's voice, I kicked and opened the door. 'Made some tea.'
She greeted me blankly and took the cup of tea. 'I'm on my period.'
'Ah... do you have that?' I asked, frowning.
She nodded. 'There is. But bring more when you go shopping.'
I sat on her bed and let the steam from the cup of tea hit my face. She was looking at me with her lips on the rim of the tea cup as if she had something to say.
'Is something wrong?' When I asked, she shook her head to say no.
I put the cup of tea aside and picked up the phone as I got a text message signal. Sahesh had informed in a text message that he had come to our house. I looked at Mehansa. Whether she liked it or not, I couldn't afford to let go of Sahesh. He was my best friend since childhood. Besides, she knows very well that I like him. Mehansa turned to look at me because she felt me staring at her.
'Why' When she asked, I came to my senses and looked at her.
'Sahesh has come. Hold on to this just for today. I'll try not to ask him to come?' When I said in a slightly pleading voice, Mehansa looked back at her computer as if she didn't hear anything.
