HAWKINS INDIANA NOVEMBER 1983
Mike stared at her from across the hall, her long raven hair trailing down her back as she stood on her toes to get her book from her locker.
This girl was Jaime Gonzalez, never spoke to anyone, which he always thought was strange. She was beautiful, so how she didn't become popular almost instantly was shocking. She had long black hair, tan skin and deep brown eyes. Jaime was short and a bit chubby.
He doesn't even think he's heard her talk. It is just strange because even with how quiet and lonely she seems to be, there's always one kid who can talk to her, no problem.
Will Byers, his best friend. A kid Mike's known all his life, it seemed like an unlikely friendship, he's never seen Will strike up a conversation himself. He and Jaime seemed a lot alike in that regard, so maybe he could see them being friends.
There were so many questions in his mind about how this friendship came out. How did they meet? Who spoke first? How come Will never invited her to hang out with them? Is it because she thinks the rest of them are lame? Does Will know that?
Mike watched as Will walked away from her. "Are you excited about Sunday?" Will asked. The boy had a big smile on his soft face. He was just so excited to play his friends' campaign that he had been setting up for so long. Two weeks Mike had been planning this for.
Mike just continued staring at Jaime. She closed her locker before glancing at them. The girl noticed his gaze, and quickly diverting her eyes, she walked away from her locker. "Mike? Hello...? Mike!" He waved his hands in front of his face.
The dark-haired boy snapped out of it and looked down. "Uh yeah, super pumped! You guys are going to lose it when you've seen what I have planned for this campaign!" He said, as he laughed. They walked away from his locker with Will out to enjoy the weekend.
Jaime was going to be doing anything but enjoying the weekend. Without her dad around to keep her company, she would unfortunately have to be a baby sat by her awful babysitter, Steve.
He was the worst. Never once cared about her, just let her sit alone in his parents' big house as he hung out with his friends. She just watched Tv or drew all the time when she was there with nothing else to do.
Getting out of school, she slowly rode her bike home, stopping at the library. Jaime grabbed her books that she had borrowed. "Well, hello there, Jaime. Here to return to those?" The librarian asked.
"Yeah, the due date was tomorrow," she said. Jaime was always so quiet, but in a library that always helped.
"Oh, you're always so responsible for your books! Do you have anything you want to borrow today?"
Jaime looked around the library. "I'll find something," she said. Jaime walked away from the desk, looking around the library for something to borrow.
She strolls through the fantasy books, her hand gliding over the slightly dusty book cases, hoping to find something new. Sure there has to be something new? Then some caught her eye a small red book "Alanna: the first adventure"
The girl picks it up. It seemed new, no folds in the paper or damaged on the book's spine. Jaime takes it to the counters. The librarian smiles, "Ah found something already? Oh, and it's new! That's good, you always borrow the same 4 book series." She said, chuckling while scanning the book.
Jaime nods her head slowly, taking the book and waving goodbye to the woman. The short girl grabs her bike and rides back home.
Rummaging through her backpack, she finds the key to her house. Jaime quickly unlocks the door and walks inside.
A dull empty house, just like always. Jaime's dad was an electrician, so he was out quite a lot. Luckily, Friday nights were pizza night, a weekly tradition since they'd moved in.
Jaime threw her bag in her room and sat on her bed, opening up the book to find a rich fantasy universe. She loved the main character, brave and confident, able to stand up for herself. Everything that Jaime wasn't.
She closed the book, putting her purple bookmark in the middle of the page. Jaime looked up at her bare ceiling. Why was she like this? She had no friends except her neighbour Will, and that was by chance!
Jaime tried to fit in, tried to act like everyone else, but nobody wanted to be her friend. It's like something was wrong with her and everyone knew, but she just couldn't figure it out.
She just wanted friends who wouldn't be ashamed to hang out with her. Will was great, but she wished she could hang out with him during lunch or after school in the AV club. Doubtful, she believed his friends would not accept her into their group, possibly because of the rumours about her being mute. Which everyone knew wasn't true, yet still said so to taunt her.
Jaime looked over at her clock. At 5pm, she spent too long at the library. Again. The girl got up from her bed, shoes off, socks still on, she shuffled down the hall. Time to watch tv until dad got home. She sat on the couch, crossing her legs underneath her. She pressed the button. Eggo waffles ad, they were ok. She liked pancakes more, though. Jaime switched through channels, trying to find something. She ended up staying on an infomercial channel.
6pm. The front door opens slowly with Jaime's dad walking through, pizza in hand. "I'm back, sweetie!" Jaime jumped up from the couch and hugged him. "Woah, hang on kiddo, let me put down the pizza first."
He set down the pizza and pulled her into a hug. "Hey firefly," he said in the hug. "How was school?" he let go, and she just shrugged, grabbing the pizza and sitting down on the couch.
Carlos was worried about Jaime. She only talked about school work when she talked about school. Jaime didn't seem to have any friends or even activities she wanted to do in or outside of school.
It had been hard since they moved from Virginia, but it had been 5 years since he hoped she would've made even some friends or something.
"What movie do you want to watch?" She asked him.
Carlos just sighed."¿tengo otra opción?" he picked up the VHS tape from the top of the tv
"Nope." She smiled, kicking her legs back and forth.
He laughed. "Aliens, as always" he put the tape on the player. They sat and watched the movie while eating pizza for the rest of the night.

- So uh this is a complete rewrite if you've read this story before. Uhh Jaime has changed. I didn't really like her old story.
I felt that I would touch more upon the 'loser' aspects of the show. All our main characters expect for like 1 or 2 are outcasts and losers. I felt that it would be better for Jaime to fit in more with that.I've also changed relationships and characters completely her dad has changed, and she's no longer cousins with Steve. This is going to help later trust me.
I also just wanted to make Jaime more openly bilingual. So she'll be speaking more spanish in my story.
DISCLAIMER!!! I don't speak spanish like at all I also don't know anyone who speaks spanish so if there's anything wrong please just correct me politely thanks
