HAWKINS NOVEMBER 1983

Jaime sighed. Standing in front of her door, she turned around and watched the maroon car speed off. Spending the day being babysat by Steve Harrington wasn't exactly thrilling. He didn't even want her there, so most of the day she spent reading and drawing alone.

Jaime opened the door with her key. Walking into the house felt cold. The lights were off, so that didn't help. She turned the lights on. The house was empty. Her dad's absence was evident in the entry hallway. No keys on the key hook, no jacket on the coat rack. All of it was empty, so empty to where you could see the wallpaper lines that Carlos had tried so hard to cover.

The girl walked down the hall to the kitchen, where she started setting up for dinner. She grabbed out eggs and some bacon from the white fridge, covered in magnets riddled with company phone numbers. Jaime waited around for her dad. He never really taught her how to make food using the stove yet, so she didn't start cooking.

It had been a while so she sat down and watched some tv, read her book, cleaned her room, but still Carlos wasn't there, it was unlike him to be late from work, sure it happened from time to time, but he would always contact her if that was the case. He was just an electrician, after all. What could really keep him back this long?

It was now 8pm. Jaime was still awake. She would usually never stay up this late on a school night, but no dad at this time of night scared her. Jaime went to her room, now clean from her time spent alone. She could see the purple walls and beige carpet. Across from her bed, she had a window, which she had closed the curtains for.

Jaime peers outside the window, pulling back her curtains. Luckily for her, right outside her window was another house. The Byers house, her best friend, Will, lived right across from her, although she's not really sure if she can call him her best friend when he's the only one who speaks to her. Jaime stared out the window. She saw the lights on. Looked like someone was in the house, thank god.

Jaime shut the curtains again. Then she went around the house, making sure all the doors were locked. Again.

The short girl wandered around to the back door, finding that both of them were closed. She double checked the locks. At that moment, the sound of leaves rustling caught her attention from the side of the house. It was slow. The crunching of the leaves just got louder and louder. The steps were heavy, too heavy to be something like a bobcat.

She sat silently out of sight to wait for it to pass, her heart pumping loudly. The growling was unfamiliar to Jaime. Never had she heard a creature make a sound like that.
