WHEELER RESIDENTS MARCH 1986

It was early morning, and the basement was filled with the soft snores of the group. They had all fallen asleep together while trying to protect Max and Jaime. The only one awake was Max, staring into the dim glow of the room.

Mike sat up with Jaime nestled in his arms, headphones perched on her head. The soft tones of "The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA played faintly.

Jaime stirred, blinking her eyes open to see Max still awake on the couch, looking like she hadn't slept at all. Jaime glanced at Dustin, who was snoring quietly, clearly failing at his self-appointed guard duty.

"Hey," Jaime murmured, her voice rough from sleep. She gently pulled her headphones down around her neck and stretched before making her way to the couch. She sat at the other end, tucking her feet underneath her.

Max looked up, her eyes tired but alert. "Hi," she replied softly.

Jaime hesitated for a moment, then asked, "So, you wanna talk about it?"

Max gave her a small, wry smile. "Do you?"

They both chuckled, a brief moment of levity in the heavy air. But Max's expression quickly turned serious. "Seriously though, what happened with Vecna?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Jaime looked away, her gaze drifting to the floor. "If I told you I wasn't sure, would you believe me?"

Max shook her head, a knowing look in her eyes. "You can't lie to me. I know what you're going through." There was a pause as Jaime's shoulders tensed, the conversation heading into uncomfortable territory.

Max continued, "Does it have something to do with why you and Lucas aren't really talking right now?"
Jaime bit her lip, not wanting to delve into her complicated feelings.

She deflected, "What about you? You didn't exactly tell us what Billy was saying to you. I know he did... they always do." Max's expression hardened, and she looked away. Jaime sighed, "I guess we're at a stalemate, huh?"

Max glanced at her Walkman, still playing Kate Bush. "Lucas said you knew which song was my favourite. How did you know?"

Jaime smiled sheepishly. "Honestly, I guessed. I heard it on the last day of school, before you went to Ms. Kelley's."

Max's brow furrowed in confusion. "I don't know why you'd remember something like that... I've been so mean to you guys. I don't even know why you want to be friends anymore."

"Max, you're right. You have been kind of mean, or at least standoffish. But that doesn't mean we should give up on you," Jaime said gently. "We all know you've been going through a hard time."
