GONZALEZ RESIDENTS NOVEMBER 1983

Jaime had fallen asleep, crying herself to exhaustion. Jaime hadn't mentioned the thing she had seen on her way home. She knew what she saw, but it all happened so fast she wasn't even sure if what she saw was real.

Will's death was still fresh, and she needed time to process that.

And after Mike's outburst, she went into a non-verbal state. Carlos knew how to deal with this. It wasn't the first time this had happened and it won't be the last.

He opened the bedroom door and turned on the light. The pale yellow light bounced off the periwinkle walls. Carlos tried his best to step over the toys scattered on the floor, dodging my little ponies and Barbie dolls.

He laid her on her bed and tucked her in. He trudged out of the room but noticed a drawing on her desk. It was one of Will's drawings that he gave to her as a present for her birthday this year.

Carlos tried to get a closer look at it but unfortunately wasn't able to because the light kept flickering. "Ugh, stupid light, I've gotta get that fixed," he muttered, walking out of the room and flicking the light off. He walked out into the living room, turning on the TV.
                                     _________

Carlos's hazel eyes shot wide open at the sound of knocking at his door. The tall man stood up and sluggishly walked to the old oak door. He opened it, and outside was a boy around Jaime's age.

"Uh hi are you Jaime's dad?" He says

"Uh yeah, who's asking?" He says with a stern voice. He looked at this boy, long curly hair, baseball cap, didn't look familiar at all.

"Oh umm, I'm Dustin Henderson. I'm Jaime's friend," the boy says.

The man sighs. "Look kid, I don't know how long you've been Jaime's friend, but she isn't speaking right now. I would just leave her alone," He says

"I just need a second to talk to her, that's all," He asked. Carlos didn't want to let him in but he claimed to be Jaime's friend, and he thought she could really use some right about now.

"Fine, come in," Jaime's dad just side stepped letting Dustin in, he looked irritated at Dustin's lack of manners, mainly his shoes were still on in the house.

Dustin walked down the hall to the door with a handmade sign with 'Jaime's room' written on it, the sign was blue, purple and green with flowers on it. He knocked on the door as he slowly opened the door.

Dustin saw her lying in her bed, her room was dark, looked like she wasn't even going to get up for school. "Jaime, you awake?" he asked

Jaime just sat up, her eyes looked dull, the bags under her eyes seemed more prominent now. She just grabbed a pen, and her note book from her bedside table 'What do you want?' she asked writing it down.
