WHEELER RESIDENTS NOVEMBER 1983
The rain poured over the town and thunder boomed loud in the distance. The four kids stood in Mike Wheeler's basement, clothes soaking wet from the rain, as the girl they found in the woods was sitting on the couch, not saying a word. "Is there a number we can call for your parents?" Mike asks, looking down at the girl just as drenched as they were.
"Where's your hair? Do you have cancer?" Dustin asked her. Jaime slightly nudged his arm, shaking her head.
"Did you run away?"
"Are you in some kind of trouble?"
"Is that blood?" Lucas asks, reaching out and getting his hand smacked by Mike.
Lucas flinches and Mike yells at him, "Stop it! You're freaking her out!"
"She's freaking me out!" Lucas said, point at her
Jaime stood next to Dustin. Dustin lifts his head up a bit, getting an idea. "I bet she's deaf." Dustin claps in her face and she flinched. "Not deaf."
Jaime sighed in embarrassment "Esto es lo peor," she whispered to herself. Jaime got sick and tired of standing, so she sat down next to the unknown girl. "You guys are kinda bad at this," Jaime said quietly, resting her head on her hand.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Dustin asks.
"I think we should calm her down first," Jaime says, resting her chin on her hand and looking up at the boys.
"So, what should we do?" Mike asked, looking at Jaime for her advice since they were doing it all wrong.
Jaime looked at the girl and then back at Mike. "Do you have any dry clothes or something? Getting her into something more comfortable might help," she asked. Mike nodded, walking to a pile of clothes that he had and handing them to the girl.
"Here, these are clean." She wipes her face on it a bit before going to pull up the large yellow shirt. They freak out. Mike put his arms in front of her to keep them down. She looked around, confused why everyone was reacting like that.
"Oh, my God. Oh, my God." Dustin yells out, looking away they all looked away from her.
Jaime cringed. "Eh, aquí no," she said, putting her hands out to stop her, not that anyone understood, gently taking the girl's hand and walking past all the boys, leading her to the bathroom in the basement.
"Here, privacy," Jaime says simply and kindly. The long-haired girl goes to shut the door on the girl, but she stops it.
"No," the girl spoke determinedly. Jaime understands and slowly nods her head.
