Lucy
I wake up exhilarated. I am ready for anything. I shake Chloe awake and she gets up as motivated as me. Maybe this African air does something really good to your brain!
Today we decide to try and build a shelter of some sort because last night was pretty cold, and it felt like it could rain any day soon. " Let's get some tree branches to make a little hut." I suggest.
"Great idea, I'll climb the tree, because as we all know...your favourite activity isn't climbing trees!!" Chloe laughs. I remember that day so well. I was in year 3 and my friend Liv got a footy stuck in the tree. I bravely offered to go fetch it. Bad idea Lucy! I ended up in the Emergency Room at the local hospital. I had fallen out from about 3 meters up in the tree and broken my wrist, sprained my ankle and had concussion for 2 weeks. "Yeah, you can climb the tree this time! Be careful though." I give her a knee up and she starts climbing. About an hour later we have a small pile of branches and logs ready to make a hut. We find a sheltered area with lots of trees and some grassy patches. I pick up a log with Chloe's help and we start making our hut. It's coming along really well! It is sort of like a tepee. It's really awesome. We put our backpacks in it and eat another biscuit. They are chocolate and really good! Chloe I I decide it's definitely time to start hunting for some food. Neither of us are vegetarians so that's a relief. We make a small trap out of twigs and leaves. It has a tiny piece of biscuit inside so the animal will smell something interesting and then go into the trap. Wula! We set up two of these near a river we found. Chloe has this idea that we should try killing an animal with Joe's pocket knife. I agree but I don't won't to do the killing. I've never been a fan of that. Chloe walks off and spots a big Elephant, she doesn't want to kill that for our dinner so we keep on going. About 20 minutes later I spot an injured bird. It looks like a hawk, it's that massive. Chloe bravely climbs a tree and aims for the bird. I won't go into much more detail but about an hour later we were sitting happily back at our tepee eating a meal! Our first proper meal ( apart from chocolate biscuits ) in a couple of days. We lit a fire and started cooking the bird. It smelt so good.
The meal was definitely a success and we hop into bed early. "Night Lucy." Chloe says tiredly.
"Night Chloe, thanks for the dinner!" I whisper back and we fall asleep.
