"There is nothing certain, but the uncertain."Washington D.C, America
November, 2016RED, BLUE, YELLOW. IT WAS all she focused on as her fingers tapped the surface of her rubik's cube. Her eyes jumped across the squares. Red, blue, yellow–green. Her fingers tapped again, rhythmically familiar. A few audience members cleared their throats, small coughs echoing across the courtroom. Lucy's eyes flicked to the exits, counted how many guards stood in the room.
She turned her head, glancing at James as he stared ahead of him, clenching his hands against his thighs. He'd been the one to kill the target, and he'd also been the one to receive punishment after running away. She flinched at the memory, letting her eyes wander over the rubik's cube again. It was the same constants, the same colors, the same clicking sound.
"All rise." One of the judges stated. "Court is now in session. We will proceed with Indictment number, 1987-4448, the People vs. The Winter Soldier and the Verfall Soldier."
He cleared his throat.
"Ms. Parker, if you would take a seat at the witness table." He beckoned.
James stiffened as his eyes shifted from his lap to the older woman. He quickly looked back down as guilt threatened to choke him. He couldn't help the nasty feeling in his stomach– couldn't help the tremor that traveled through him.
He let out a quiet exhale, attempting to calm himself down. He felt Lucy's hand wrap around his, holding onto him tightly.
Ms. Parker lowered herself into the witness's seat, glancing at the defendant's table. She looked between the pair, unable to ignore the outright trauma they displayed. But. . .they had killed her mother's brother when he was just a child. And that was something so unforgivable she simply could not forgive them.
"Ms. Fontaine, you may continue questioning the witness." Another judge stated, shuffling a few sheets of paper.
Lucy and James both turned their heads, eyes dark as Ms. Fontaine stood to her feet, giving the judge a bright smile. She stepped in front of the witness again, looking down at the clipboard in between her hands.
Again, look, it hasn't started screaming yet.
Lucy squeezed her eyes shut, clutching onto James's hand tighter. She remembered her standing just as she was now, in front of a doctor or a researcher or someone with higher status. But that was it–just the voice, just the motion.
