"The best way to predict the future is to create it."

Washington D.C, America
November, 2016

IT WAS NERVE WRACKING. Waiting to hear their fate. Sitting in the courtroom wasn't really surprising anymore. There was no perplexity, no confusion on how to act or what was appropriate. No, Lucy and James only needed to be taught once. After being conditioned for so long, their shouldn't have been a need to be told something repeatedly. They listened the first time, because the consequences that awaited them would be dire.

Not that there were anymore consequences. The absence of punishment was good. It was relieving–freeing in ways that both had refused at first. They enjoyed it far more than they did just a few years ago.

Lucy clutched James's hands between hers tightly as the judges settled themselves in their seats. The jury followed suit, political members that were chosen for their lack of bias gazing at them with uncertainty. She wasn't afraid of being guilty, or not guilty. She'd been trapped in a cell for decades, tortured for decades. If she was sent to prison, it was no big deal. How could she be surprised by something as mundane as that? HYDRA had taken her again and again.

It was the pattern.

It was. . .normal.

So yes, being guilty and put in a prison didn't mean much to her. But being separated from James? That was a whole different ordeal, and she would tear the world to the ground if they dared to separate her from him. Because he was her lifeline, as much as she was his.

One of the judges cleared their throat.

"All rise." She stated. "Court is now in session. We will proceed with Indictment number, 1987-4448, the People vs. The Winter Soldier and the Verfall Soldier."

Another one of them coughed.

It reverberated against the courtroom walls, wobbling against their ears. Lucy tightened her grip on James, holding closely.

"After careful consideration from both the juries and the Supreme Court Judges, the verdict which will be given is a unique, first and last given verdict." He explained. "This case in itself has multiple facets that even we cannot firmly and pridefully judge upon. What happened to both the defendants and the victims of the defendants was indeed horrible. So we say this verdict with both the plaintiffs and the defendants in mind."

Paper slid against paper as one of the judges removed the wax stamp on an envelope. He pried it open, eyes focused on the sliver of font.

"The verdict is as follows: the defendants are guilty."
