"God, what a world. Universe, now. If you told me ten years ago that we weren't alone, let alone to this extent, I mean, I wouldn't have been surprised, but come on, who knew?"

New York
June, 2023

JAMES ONLY KNEW THAT he was staring at a needle, a briefcase, and an IV hooked up to a stand. None of the objects were being used, but James's nerves were through the roof. He wanted to be in the room, but he knew that would confuse Lucy further than he was willing to risk. So many things could go wrong, but none of them would lead to her death.

At least this way, Lucy wouldn't have to wake up scared of accidentally killing someone. At least this way, he reminded himself, she was still retaining who she was.

Steve stood to his left, Sam at his right. They stood in front of the CCTV console which they'd dragged in with Dr. Banner's help. Natasha and Yelena stood a little off to the side as they watched the room, empty of all movement except for Lucy's soft breaths. Her heart had slowed again, and James had made the decision in a frantic mess.

If her heart dropped any lower, the doctors insisted her life would be on the line. He was confident in Henry's words, but at the same time, other medical professionals were telling him something terrifying. He couldn't wait any longer, nor could he risk it. He didn't want to hurt Lucy, but he didn't want her to die.

He swallowed the guilt in his throat.

Steve gave his hand a little squeeze.

Footsteps echoed in the hall and both Black Widows turned to look at Henry as he stepped towards them. He was dressed in a white lab coat, his hands gloved and sterilized. He was followed by Klause, whose face was rather grim.

Henry didn't acknowledge the others, shooting Klause a pointed look. He pushed the door open for him, wincing as Henry walked past him.

The door clicked with a shut, and Klause let out a breath of relief, sighing.

"You look like you've had one hell of a day." Yelena piped up.

Klause glanced at her, frowning deeply.

"He's upset, Yelena." He replied.

James turned to look at him.

"About what?" He asked, confused.

Klause pointed behind him to the room with his thumb.

"He doesn't want to be here, nor does he want to do what he has to." Klause admitted. "But. . .I don't want Lucy to die either."
