David slowly regained consciousness from his slumber to the feeling of emptiness. His hands rapidly searched all over the couch to discover that Chris had completely disappeared and left him alone. He lazily opened his eyes to be met with the snout of some beast staring at him and, after rubbing his eyes to properly wake up, he noticed it was a dog. David wasn't very good with dog breeds and he couldn't make a guess as to what this one was. It was one he had never seen before, just a medium sized dog with grey fur and beady brown eyes that gazed intensely at David.
He reached out to let the dog sniff his hand but it ducked out of the way and bent down, clearly thinking the strange new human was trying to play with it. David reached again for the dog but it evaded his grasp as it danced and galloped around the coffee table.
"Come on, dude. Let me pet you." He pointed at the dog and kept his hand still as it ceased the excitement and slowly approached the human, lowering its head to sniff at his hand before it started to lick his fingers. David grinned at his victory and gave the dog's head a gentle scratch to show his gratitude.
While David showed the dog how much he appreciated him, his eyes wandered around the room that he assumed was the living room. The boy sat up and pat his lap for the dog to jump up and sit with him, which it happily did. The walls were covered in a dark gray wallpaper that had pictures frames plastered all over them. Although he was far away from the pictures and studied a few of them earlier, he could make them all out to pictures of Chris and his family. Now that he was properly awake and had clear vision, he wanted to get a good look at every photo.
The boy's eyes soon wandered down to a picture frame that rested on the small wooden stand that stood beside the couch. The picture was of a young boy with blond hair that looked like a helmet on his head. David recognised those blue eyes, those dimples, that scar. This was a young Chris! In David's opinion, Chris was a cute kid. He had big rosey cheeks that any grandma would love to pinch, and a big cheesy grin that radiated joy.
While David stared at the picture frame, the sound of cutlery rocking against each other and footsteps approaching caused David to hastily place the picture back down on the stand and act like nothing happened. The boy looked over his shoulder to see Chris make an appearance with a tray of food in his hands. He looked relaxed and relieved at the sight of David awake and not in tears.
"Is he bothering you?" Chris walked around the couch and placed the tray of food down on the coffee table before he shooed the dog off of the couch and shimmied closer to David.
"He wouldn't let me pet him but my charm was too irresistible. What's his name?"
"Maximus, Max for short. He's a Sharpei and is a sly wee fucker so don't let him trick you into giving him things."
"What do you mean? Just look at him! He's so cute and looks so innocent." David grinned at Max and gently rubbed both sides of his face.
"Yeah, that's how he gets you. What were you looking at before I got here?"
"Oh! Uh..." Oh no, was he in trouble? "Just that picture there. Is that you?"
Chris looked past David and down at the picture beside them. He scowled at the picture and reached over to place it down on its face so he didn't have to see the picture. "Yeah, that's me. My mum took it back when we were in Scotland. She's the reason why I like photography."
"That's cool. I never would have guessed you were a blond."
"Most people don't. I don't think I would've suited blond hair anyway."
