Sofie
"Uh, thanks." I took the pop can from the guy and tried to keep the blush forming in my cheeks. I dropped the lid on the cooler and popped a squat.
"Do you mind if I sit?" The guy gestured at a cooler.
"It's a free country." I shrugged and opened my pop can.
The guy sat on a cooler as I tried to remain calm. But it was hard since my heart was beating out of my chest.
"What brings you here?" The guy asked me.
I sipped my pop before answering. My throat became the Sierra Desert. "I came with a friend."
"Oh?" The guy arched his brow.
I pointed at Rachel. "Yeah. Rachel is hanging out with Gabby and Daria."
"Oh." The guy nodded and sipped his pop.
"So, what brings you to this drunken debauchery?"
A deep chuckle radiated from the guy. Oh, my word. He has a fantastic laugh.
"My cousin dragged me here." The guy sipped his pop.
"I'm guessing you don't get out much?"
"Not really." The guy shook his head.
"Oh." I took a sip of my pop.
"I work a lot."
I glanced at the guy. "What do you do for a living?"
Could I be any more boring? What kind of question is that? It's like asking your grandmother if she took her meds.
"I'm not sure my job would interest you. It's not the most glamorous job."
"It depends on the job. You might consider it mundane while others don't." I crossed my legs to keep from fidgeting.
"True."
"Okay, so we established you have a boring job. Do you have any friends?"
"Define friends." The guy curled his brow.
I had to consider his answer for a moment. The longer we sat here, the sweatier I became. Ugh. Think, Sofie.
*******
OdinI sat on the cooler as the girl rubbed her face and chin. Her leg bounced as she contemplated what I said. I wasn't sure who she was, but I found her nervousness adorable.
"Okay. You got me. I don't have many friends."
The girl gaped at me.
"I work sixteen-hour days, so it doesn't leave much time for friends," I added, trying to hide my embarrassment.
"Oh." The girl uncrossed her legs and leaned forward. "Do you not want any friends?"
I quirked my brow.
The girl straightened her posture. "Sorry. That sounded accusatory."
A chuckle escaped my lips.
"I'm not usually like this." The girl rolled her eyes and shook her head.
"Like what?"
"Trying to have a conversation with a random stranger. I usually stick with my friends."
"Oh, so if we became friends, I wouldn't be a stranger?"
The girl stared at me with wide eyes. Shit.
"I meant the conversation would flow easier because we're friends."
The girl opened her mouth, then closed it. Okay, I'm crashing and burning with this girl.
