I stretched and opened my eyes to find my bed empty. Not again. As I sat up, the bedroom door opened as Sofie carried a tray with food, coffee, and two Ibuprofen.

"I thought you might be hungry." Sofie set the tray on the nightstand.

I grabbed the Ibuprofen, popped them into my mouth, took a swig of coffee, and gulped them down. "Thanks. I figured you skated after last night."

Sofie sat beside me. "Nope, sorry. You're stuck with me since I'm homeless."

"I don't mind getting stuck with you." I smirked.

Sofie grinned as I kissed her. I picked up my plate and dug in. Good thing she made scrambled eggs since my mouth was sore from last night.

My phone rang. I set my plate down and answered it. "Hello?"

Grayson called me. The Feds want you to come in for questioning and bring Sofie with you.

"When?"

This evening. Grayson will meet us at the Federal Building.

"Fine." I ended the call and returned to my breakfast.

"Who was on the phone?"

"My dad called and said we must go to the Federal building for questioning."

"I don't know what they expect. It's not like my dad was forthcoming about his business."

"That will work in our favor."

Sofie gave me a reassuring smile.

I dug up any information I could find on Robert Haywood. A stack of folders sat on my office desk of all businesses Robert Haywood hired, including Harper and Harper Construction.

My legal aid brought more files and set them on my desk.

"I want you to pull the financials from these banks and businesses." I handed my legal aid a piece of paper that listed business names.

"Give me a few hours," Mark said.

I nodded and returned to my work. A few minutes later, someone knocked on my office door.

I didn't bother to look up. "Yeah?"

"Did you find out anything?"

I lifted my head to see Elias and Owen standing in my office. "I'm still working on it." I lowered my head, flipped through paperwork, and highlighted anything pertinent information. I jotted notes and added questions.

"Grayson, I understand you're busy, but we need an update," Elias said.

"I don't have one yet," I mumbled.

"Grayson, my boy, is in trouble, and so is the business," Owen said.

My head snapped up. "What do you want from me?"

Elias and Owen looked at me with knitted brows.

I rose from my seat and leaned on my desk. "Do you think you're the only one who has issues? You're not. I'm sorry you signed a contract with a schmuck."

"Grayson, we're not asking for a favor. We're asking for help," Elias said.

"Help?" I moved from behind my desk. "Every time I turned around, you called me for help! If I refuse, you throw the past in my face! Because I got you thrown in the clink, I owe you for the rest of my life! When do I stop owing you? When do I stop getting the past thrown into my face?"
