Sofie
Living with Odin and his cousins was interesting. But I prefer it to life with my parents. At least they didn't hold me hostage.
Odin picked me up from school and drove me to the bakery. We entered and approached the counter. After ordering and getting our food, we found an empty table to sit at.
I unwrapped my turnover. "When do you go back to work?"
"Once Grayson takes care of the legalities. I can't wait since I'm not used to sitting idle this long." Odin took a bite of his lemon meringue pie.
"What about in between building houses?"
"We don't stay idle for long. Unless the weather is shit, we keep building. Dad and Elias want to expand the company and open another office building since the business is growing."
"I'm sure it will happen."
"I hope so. I love working with my hands."
"I applied for grants and scholarships for school. I'm waiting to hear if I received any."
"One way or another, you'll further your education. It's not fair that your dad is a schmuck and cost you a chance at your future."
"It wouldn't matter because I planned to further my education with or without my parents' help. Kids need a chance in life. They shouldn't suffer because adults can't get their heads out of their asses."
Odin chuckled as I shrugged.
The bell chimed. I turned my head to see Rachel and Gabby enter the bakery. I waved to them. They strolled toward our table.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"We stopped to get some goodies for my grams," Gabby said.
"Want to join us?"
"Yeah, sure. Give us a minute." Gabby and Rachel headed to the counter.
"Who's with Rachel?" Odin asked.
"That's Gabby. She and Rachel attend a local college. I met them when I transferred to Oakridge high. I was a freshman, and they were juniors."
"Ah."
Gabby and Rachel returned to the table and joined us. Gabby set a bag of treats on the table
"Gabby, I want you to meet my boyfriend, Odin Harper. Rachel met Odin already," I said.
Rachel waved to Odin. Odin nodded in return.
"It's nice to meet the guy that saved Sofie from a life of doom and gloom," Gabby said.
Odin snickered.
"Oh, Odin had the pleasure of meeting Daria," I mentioned.
Rachel and Gabby glanced at each other.
"How did you enjoy meeting Daria?" Gabby asked Odin.
"Your friend Daria needs to watch the five-finger discount. She tried to lift merchandise from my family's hardware store." Odin took a sip of his coffee.
Rachel averted her eyes as she ate.
"Daria is good for paying people back. She gets short on cash at times," Gabby said.
"Daria might want to watch it. Not everyone is understanding," Odin replied.
Gabby tightened her lips into a thin line.
"Odin helped Daria with a few repairs at her place," I said.
"That was nice of you to do," Rachel said.
