A thing called love

Odin led me inside to a blanket on a hardwood floor with a picnic.

"Aww, how romantic. It's still not getting you out of the doghouse."

"I didn't think it would."

"At least you have some common sense." I patted Odin's chest before sitting on the blanket.

Odin joined me and handed me a styrofoam container. I took it from him, opened the lid, and dove into my food. What? Did you think I wouldn't eat this scrumptious food? I'm not an idiot.

"What changed your mind?"

Odin chewed his food and swallowed. "I realized I can't pine over someone I met once."

"Why would you pine over a stranger?"

"I built this idea in my head that the girl was this amazing person. And she talked about another guy."

I arched my brow as I ate my food.

"When I think about it, it sounds ridiculous."

"That's because it is ridiculous. You make no sense." I shoved a forkful of food into my mouth.

"I'm a guy. Most of the time, we don't make any damn sense. Take my brother, for example. His ex asked him where they stood. My brother couldn't give her an answer."

"Sounds familiar."

Odin regarded me.

"Go on."

"Anyway, my brother finally got his head out of his ass and declared his love to his ex. She shot him down like an airplane going into combat." Odin made a crashing noise with his mouth as he moved his hand downward.

"So, your brother crashed and burned because he played fast and loose with a girl's feelings. Makes sense."

Odin snickered.

"I firmly believe you tell someone the truth, even if they don't like it. I would rather hear a harsh truth than believe a pretty lie."

"How many guys have you dated?"

I thought about Odin's question. "Two other guys besides you. I wouldn't say they were life-changing relationships because they lasted a few months."

"It surprises me that your dad allowed you to date."

"Yeah, considering my dad found out, he forced me to end things."

"Wait. Did you lie to your parents?"

"No. I didn't tell them I was dating a guy. It's not like they care anyway. You met my dad. Does he seem like the caring type?"

"No, your dad is an asshole."

"You proved my point."

"What about your mom?"

"What about her?"

"You don't say much about her."

"My mom didn't raise me. She hired nannies to do her job. I only see my mom when my dad comes home. Sometimes, I don't see her at all." I shrugged.

Odin gave me a look I knew all too well.

"I don't need your pity or sympathy."

"I don't pity you but admire you. You could have turned out horrible, but you didn't."

"I have friends that care about me. If I didn't have them, I wouldn't have anyone."

"You have me." Odin curled his brow and smiled.
