"Jasmine, is that you?" Lili shouted from the far end of the library.
Jasmine quickly ran through the sliding door that connected the secret tunnel to the library and grabbed a book from the shelf.
"A history of snails? Not your usual read" the queen posed as she popped her head round the corner, catching her out-of-breath daughter off guard.
The nervous princess walked into the centre of the large room, ushering her mother away from her secret escape and dusted off the twigs and leaves from her dress.
"Where have you been? Your dress is all dirty?" Lili questioned.
"I was...in the garden before coming here to look for how to get rid of snails safely. They're eating all the cabbages, you know?" Jasmine stuttered, trying to avoid her mother's inquisitive gaze.
"Mr Haines deals with the garden so I'm sure he'll sort out the snails and you don't like cabbages so why are you so concerned about them?" Lili continued with a raised eyebrow.
The anxious princess shifted from one foot to another knowing that it was always difficult to hide anything from her 'detective' mother.
"I just wanted -" Jasmine started then paused when a knock sounded from the library door at the other end of the room.
"Enter" the queen announced and the door creaked open to reveal a guard waiting for permission to enter.
Lili beckoned him forward,
"The king requests your attendance in his office immediately your royal highnesses" he stated with his head bowed.
"What is this about mother? Is it about my 18th birthday?" Jasmine questioned.
"I don't think so but let's go and see" Lili riddled and guided her bewildered daughter forward to follow the guard out of the room.
They walked down the corridor in silence as Jasmine felt a pang of foreboding in her stomach.
"Do they know about the forest? Will they stop my magic lessons? Will they ban me from ever going to the forest again?" The anxious princess thought as they reached the imposing double wooden doors within minutes.
The standing guards opened them in rhythm, revealing Jack sitting at the head of the oversized wooden table in the middle of the large office.
"Jasmine! Come in and meet King William of Vanus" Her father shouted.
Lili rolled her eyes as she reluctantly presented her daughter to the visitor.
"Your majesty" the bewildered princess bowed.
She looked from her mother to her father for answers before sitting around the large wooden table set out for meetings and impromptu visits.
The tall, stocky man sat down next to the king at the head of the table as his oversized stomach struggled to get through the gap between the table and chair.
