"Do you think you will be able to leave the forest for a life in the castle?" Lili probed as she escorted Jack to the intimidating double doors to the dining room.
Jack nervously fixed his hemp-woven top and looked uncertainly down at his cloth-strapped shoes.
"The king and queen will see you now, princess" one of the guards announced and opened the double doors slowly.
Lili grabbed Jack's hand and pulled the reluctant forest boy into the grand room and in front of her dubious parents.
"Ah, Lili! There you are! And who is this you have brought before us?" Her father bellowed.
Jack's eyes widened at the feast on the enormous table as the queen looked on in confusion.
Fruit, meats, and an assortment of dairy products filled every inch of the long wooden table, baffling the forest boy as he looked at the only two parties at either end of the elaborate bench.
"This is Jack, father. The one who rescued me from-"Lili excitedly explained then paused.
The queen raised her hand in protest,
"We do not need to mention its name again".
"Quite right! But how can a meagre boy like you go up against such evil and not only survive but save our Lili?" The king pondered, inspecting Jack's simple stature.
Jack shifted nervously on the spot before feeling Lili squeeze his hand lovingly.
He looked at Lili with a warm feeling drifting through his body and proclaimed,
"With your daughter's love, I can do anything".
A deadly silence fell upon the room and the guards quickly closed the double doors to contain the fraught atmosphere.
"Father?" Lili asked cautiously.
The king stood up and walked over to the pair with a stern look on his face.
"You love my daughter?" He asked without emotion.
Jack nodded anxiously.
"I wish to take her hand in marriage with your permission, your majesty" Jack uttered.
The king was now facing the pair with the queen joining his side and observing the couple with keen intrigue.
"Well, he did save us all from darkness" the queen commented, looking at the rough-looking forest boy with intrigue.
"But he is not of royalty" the king retorted, scratching his head at the dilemma.
Lili gazed into her parent's eyes with hope and appeal, knowing that their decision would be final as Jack let go of her hand and stepped forward.
He looked at the king in his eyes and concluded,
"You are correct, I am not of royal blood but I am of strength, fire, and determination and with me by your daughter's side, no amount of harm would ever come to her or your kingdom. I have proved this once and will prove it a thousand times just to be with Lili. Please give us a chance to prove our love to you both".
The queen held her hand to her chest and gasped at his heartfelt proclamation as the king's hesitant attention darted between the pair.
A silence fell upon the room again as the king pondered the decision, as royalty has always married royalty.
He looked into his hopeful daughter's eyes and then back to his wife and announced,
"Prepare for a royal wedding!"
The door's swung open and the guards quickly nodded and raced down the cobbled castle corridors as Lili flew into her father's arms, giving a strong embrace for his radical decision.
"We have to tell the forest folk, Jack!" Lili squealed and grabbed his hand, racing out of the room.
"Lili, we need to prepare" the queen shouted but it was too late.
The couple raced passed the bewildered staff and out of the castle grounds as they excitedly ran to the forest to invite all their friends and Jack's family to their big day.
They got to the stream and stopped,
"Do you think we could have the wedding here" Lili whispered.
They crouched down and admired the unicorn drinking from the crystal clear stream.
Its golden horn glistened in the sunlight as its mate came to join it.
"I think it would be best to have it at the castle. We don't want to spook them again" Jack reminded his new bride and she nodded and carefully backed away from the majestic animals and ran to find the rest of their friends to inform them of their big news.
