chapter 35

"dude you're a fucking cheater" i told finneas.

"nah, you just suck at video games" finneas replied.

"you suck, kai" marissa says.

"jeez, kai. have you never played call of duty before?" billie asks me, sitting next to me eating a salad.

"not really, i sing a lot and i train for martial arts. i hardly have time these days anyway" i reply.

we all got back to billie's house after the events that happened. the security team took brandon to the police station and he is currently being held there, they also gave the security footage of brandon to the detective, according to our team.

in the meantime, we try not to think about it and finneas asked me if i wanted to play call of duty, which i haven't played since i was 12. i sit in the middle of the couch with billie sitting to my left and finneas sitting to my right. marissa sits on a chair next to the couch, eating popcorn.

"babe, give me the remote" billie says, setting down her salad.

"by all means," i said, giving her the remote, "show me what you got"

i watch the tv as billie and finneas battle opponents in call of duty.

billie was sniping opponents left and right, she clearly was hella good at this game.

i get a text notification on my phone which is sitting on the table, i pick it up and see kyle's name.

so far there isn't any updates. he's being interrogated and they are going over the video clips right now.

as soon as i was about to reply, he sent me another text.

the press is going crazy, by the way. there's hella people wanting to interview you and billie. keep on the low for now, probably until the oscar's. we don't want this to get out of hand.

i replied,

got it

i set my phone on the table and took a deep breath. i just want all of us to get a break from this at some point. hopefully for now we can, but steve and my mom are still out there, and got knows how many more.

"kai" i hear billie say.

i snap out of it and lock eyes with billie.

"you okay?" she asks me, placing her hand on my thigh.

"there isn't any news on him yet, he's being interrogated and the police are going over the surveillance footage. the press is wanting interviews with us too of course." i tell her.

"of course, the media wants to know everything." she says.

"hey," finneas says, placing his hand on my shoulder and pats it, "it'll be alright. we can at least relax now for a little bit"

"yeah, kyle says he wants us to stay low for now, probably until the oscar's." i say.

"we should do that. it's the smart thing to do. plus it'll give us a break"  finneas replies.

"true," i say, i stand up and say, "i'm gonna go grab some food, you guys want anything?" i ask everyone.

"no, thank you though" billie says.

"i'm good" finneas says.

i turn towards marissa, "you want something else besides popcorn?" i ask her.

"yeah, i'll come with you to look" she says, setting down her popcorn on the table and getting up.

she walks behind me to the kitchen and i spot maggie making something on the stove.

"oooo what are you making?" i asked her, stopping next to her.

"i'm just making some cooked vegetables for a dinner that i'm making tonight, would you like some?" she asks me.

"of course, it looks amazing" i tell her.

"thank you, kai" she says.

"of course" i reply, and i start to walk towards the sink when i hear billie yell. i turn around instantly and notice that billie's player died on the tv screen.

"god damnit, fin!" billie yells.

"that's what you get for not paying attention!" finneas says back, laughing.

i laugh a little then turn back around, turning on the sink to wash my hands.

i put some soap on my hands when i notice maggie standing next to me.

"i hope you know, kai, i really appreciate everything that you have done for us." maggie says.

i look at her and give her a smile, "of course. you guys mean everything to me. i always want to make sure you guys are okay and safe" i say, i pick up a towel and start to dry off my hands.

maggie wraps her arms around my shoulders and hugs me, i set down my towel and return the hug. she then lets me go, and gives a smile.

maggie returns to her cooking and i return to the couch with a bowl of fruit, and marissa returns with a bottle of water. i sit down between billie and finneas and watch them play their game.

finneas and billie stopped playing after an hour and we all went to the backyard to eat for dinner. we all talked about random topics, and did our best not to think about what is going on right now.

after we finish our dinner, everyone goes inside besides me and billie.

"hey, i wanna show you something." billie says, getting up from her seat and holding out her hand.

"show me" i say, standing up and taking her hand.

we walk to a ladder that goes up to her roof and we both climb it. when we get to the top, we both sit down near the edge and look out at the sky.

"wow, i think this is one of the most beautiful sunsets i've seen in a very long time" i say.

"i know, it's always beautiful in california" she says.

"i bet, sometimes it's nice in chicago but there's too much sky scrapers that are in the way." i say.

"that's true, i don't know how you liked being by all those buildings."

"i mean, it's nice sometimes. but the traffic is absolutely terrible and sometimes i wondered how the hell i could keep living there"

"i bet, have you ever been to new york?"

"no, i honestly really wanna go but i don't. i'm really indecisive about that"

"it's pretty nuts"

"i bet," i turn to look at her, "do you think we can go somewhere far away for a little while? like until the oscar's?"

"where?" she asks me, turning to me.

"i was thinking somewhere in france or italy, we can decide if you want" i say.

a smile formed on her face, "i would love that, so much."

for the rest of the night, me and billie watched the rest of the sunset , and fell asleep. then i woke up to my sister shaking me, telling me to get up.
