Chapter 20 | beach day pt. 2

Shane was mostly content that day.

He expected to wake up as miserable as always and for the most part he was correct. What slipped his mind though was that it was a new season and it was the piping hot day when the town takes a whole day to cool off at the beach.

Jas had been so excited, she woke up early to prepare Marnie and Shane breakfast.

She made all that she was capable of, pancakes with toast.

They ate briefly before she practically dragged Shane out to the beach, he was barely able to finish changing into his swimming trunks and desperately trying to search for a t-shirt loose yet clean enough for the beach. He ended up settling for a blue short-sleeved zip-up and black swimming shorts with no shoes.

He had to admit, it felt free walking around town barefoot. If only the ground wasn't so piping hot.

Though the sand wasn't any better, it felt soft against his skin and he could always cool off by the water. Currently, he watched over Jas and Vincent as they made sandcastles, sipping away at a coconut.

The day had been pretty decent. Maybe he should let Jas schedule his days more often...

The only issue was that he felt somewhat left out. Aside from the occasional times, Jas would run up to him, showing off something she found or created with sand, most of her day was spent hanging around Vincent ever since he showed up with Sam.

He was salty, to say the least, but at least Sam paid for his coconut drink as a celebration of a day off from their life-draining job at Jojamart.

"Shane!"

Snapping out of his boredom, Shane turns his piercing glare away from Vincent and towards Jas. His expression softened as she scampered over, tripping over her feet with a small inflatable donut around her waist. "What's up, kid?" He helps fix her pigtails so they were on the same level and she stares up at him with puppy dog eyes.

"Can I please go swim with Y/n? I wanna hang out with the other girls too!"

Briefly, Shane analyzes the water Y/n and the other girls were in. "It's kinda deep out there." He frowns. Jas follows suit with a pout and she pokes at his knee. "I know, but they'll make sure to watch over me! Y/n said so themself!"

Shane eyed Y/n as Jas pointed to her and oddly enough, she was staring right back.

She gives him a thumbs up for reassurance, holding up a small life vest with her other hand. Sighing out, Shane finally gives in to the duo of probably the most manipulative girls in town. "Fine fine... but make sure that life vest is on right ok!?"

Shane pulls off the donut from her and she hugs his arm briefly before running towards the sea in celebration. Y/n has her hands out, ready to strap her into the vest when they meet in water shallow enough for Jas to stand in.

Still, even when she's all vested up, Y/n proceeds to pick her up and let her sit on her shoulders as she runs into deeper waters. Shane finds it endearing how social Jas was. He was glad she seemed happy.

A ghost of a smile on his face, it disappears soon enough when he remembers Vincent was still with him.

His head turns to look at the little boy. Surprisingly, he was already staring back at him violently.
