"How's cousin Sofie?" Sean asked after mass.

"I'm gonna drive your Mom to the hospital to get an update," Danny informed him as they walked to Henry's car. The church ladies had cornered Linda to pray for her and for Sofie.

"I hope she gets better," Jack said sincerely. "So Mom can be happy again."

"I don't like it when Mommy's sad," Sean agreed, looking up at his Dad with innocent eyes.

He looked back to where Linda stood; she looked almost lost. "Me neither, buddy."

The boys climbed into the car, and Danny headed over to Linda. He put a hand on her shoulder.

"I should go," Linda told the ladies. "Thank you." She smiled politely at them, but it didn't reach her eyes at all.

They all bid her goodbye and well wishes, and promised they'd continue to pray for the family.

Once in the car, Linda let out a long sigh. "They mean well, but...." She shook her head as she bit her lip.

Danny nodded, "I know."

"You don't have to see Wendy if you don't want to," she said as they started driving away. "I know you're not her biggest fan—"

"That's 'cause she's a bitch."

"I think it'd be best for her if only I went. I don't.... It's nothing against you—"

"No, Linda, I get it. I didn't want to see her either."

*******

"Leave me and my daughter alone!" Wendy yelled at her.

Linda bit her lip and swallowed, nodding her head a little. She wanted to say something, but she didn't want to be yelled at. Besides, if she opened her mouth, she'd start crying. She closed her eyes as she turned away and walked out of the hospital.

She managed to make it all the way to the car without crying. But as soon as she opened the door, the tears came.

"That was—" Danny's voice trailed off once he saw her tears. "Oh my gosh she's dead."

"No! Wendy's just a bitch! I was trying to— and she just—" she sniffed loudly, and started to dig in her purse for tissues. "She acts like I'm the bad guy for knowing who I am! And not changing for anybody! What the hell?!"

"I'm sorry she treats you like shit," Danny rubbed her shoulder. "Do you want to go home before heading to Dad's?"

"Just.... Lemme— I don't know."

"I can kick her ass for you, if you want me to. I don't mind."

She snorted and laughed just a little bit. "I'll go back later. Let her cool down first.... She always did apologize later."

Sean's voice flashed through his mind, I don't like it when Mommy's sad. "We can stop by the grocery store on the way back and get some chocolates."

Linda smiled, "I don't think that's a very good idea, babe. Just go to Frank's, I'll be fine."

"Okay," he agreed not exactly believing her. He kissed her cheek before heading to Bay Ridge.
