Linda heard her phone buzzing in her purse. She looked at the name- Frank. Her heart started to pound. Frank only called during the day like this if something was wrong. Specifically, if something was wrong with her husband. "Hello?"
"I don't want to alarm you- but a detective from Danny's squad has been shot."
She licked her lips, "o-okay... it's not... you would tell me right away if- if it was Danny, right? Because beating around the bush is cruel and I can't hold my breath that long, and I'd just much rather know right away than waiting for the other shoe to drop."
Frank was about to answer when she started ranting again. He heard the fear in her voice.
"Maybe- maybe that's not what I want, you know? I think I'd like more of a built up, y'know, to prepare me. Oh gosh, what if it's Danny? I can't- I don't think- that is, I wouldn't-"
"Linda!" Frank interrupted her worried ranting. "I'm just giving you a heads up. No one knows what has happened yet."
She nodded, "okay, okay." She let go of a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "Okay. I'm- I'm sure he'll call me any minute now."
"I should go now."
And before she had a chance to say goodbye, he hung up. She dropped her phone into her purse and started pacing. She told herself she was pacing because it was a cold night. She hugged herself, praying that her husband was okay.
Please let him be okay. Please let him be okay. Please, please, please let him be okay.
Linda watched her breath freeze as she turned to watch the boys practice. She couldn't care less about football, but she needed a distraction. She needed to keep her mind from thinking of what if situations, and what she would have to go through if the unthinkable happened.
The boys' practice was almost over, and she still hadn't heard from Frank or Danny, or even Gormley and Garrett. She was about to start praying- more like begging- again, when her phone rang. She yanked it out of her purse without even bothering to look at it.
"Danny?"
"I'm okay, babe. I'm okay."
"Thank heavens!" She breathed out, finally able to breathe. "Where the hell are you? Why didn't you call me right away?"
"I only now found out about it! But I'm okay, we're far out from there." Danny frowned, hearing Linda sniffle on the other end. His voice softened, "hey, I'm okay. It's alright. You can breathe now."
She took in a slow breath, "I know, I know. I love you."
He smiled, "I love you most. I'm fine- no, actually I'm pissed off, but physically I'm fine."
"Danny? Be careful. I wanna see you when I wake up tomorrow morning."
"You will. Promise. I really gotta go now, baby."
"Okay, I love you."
"Love you most. Bye."
"Bye." She hung up and let out another breath. She looked to the field- the boys were just finishing up. She needed to call everyone quickly.
********
Linda stretched the next morning, her eyes still closed. They fluttered open, and she smiled when she saw her husband. Knowing him, Gormley probably sent him home to get some sleep. She knew that her husband wouldn't stay long, but she was glad he kept his promise.
