"What did you just say about a phony profile?"
"What?" Linda looked at her husband.
"Alias."
"Some moms at school use fake profiles to see what their kids are getting up to."
"Does it work?"
"I think so. They don't follow them or friend them, or whatever the right terminology is. They just... watch them. They see if they're getting into trouble or not."
"You just may be a genius after all, babe. I gotta go," he kissed her goodbye, then quickly left.
Linda stared at her sister in law for a beat after Danny left. "Erin, you're being unfair to Danny."
Erin scoffed and shook her head.
"He had no choice. What was he going to do? Let Nicky walk home? Alone, at night, in New York. Let her take a cab, or the subway? Leave her in the restaurant? Seriously, Erin, what was he supposed to do?!"
"She is having nightmares-"
"I get that- I'm sorry. I am. But she was told to stay in the car-"
"Oh come on! She's fourteen. What fourteen year old listens to their Uncle? Or to anyone, for that matter?"
"I did," she said firmly.
"You were a goody two shoes, Linda."
"And you're a bitch."
All eyes turned to her. Her boys exclaimed, "Mom!"
"Go to the kitchen. Go."
She took a breath. "I'm sorry, Erin, but it's true. You can't blame Danny for having no choice. He's apologized- even though he didn't have to- and you're still pissed at him! Did you want him to leave her in the restaurant?"
"No, of course not, but-"
"Did you want him to let her walk home by herself?"
"No, but-"
"Did you want him to give her some cash to take a cab or the subway?"
"No, I didn't, but-"
"Then get your head out of your ass, and stop blaming my husband."
Erin shook her head, and hit her fist against the table. She stared at Linda, trying to come up with a good argument.
Linda only crossed her arms and lifted a perfectly sculpted brown eyebrow.
Frank came back in at that moment. "What did I miss?"
"Nothing," Erin grumbled, looking down at her food.
Later, while Jamie was doing the dishes with Linda, he told her, "I've never actually seen anyone who was able to make Erin's tale go between her legs, and keep it there. Aside from Dad and Pops, of course. Well done."
Linda shrugged, "she was being unfair to Danny."
"And that's where you draw the line?"
"I am extremely loyal to my husband, Jamie. And if someone accuses him of wrong doing, when he didn't have any other choice and it wasn't his fault at all, then you bet your sweet ass I'm gonna go all over their pathetic ass!"
He laughed and handed her a dish to put away. "Just so you know, I agree with you."
"Good."
*********
"Jamie says that you kind of blew your top at Erin during dinner."
"Ugh, she's such a bitch. And she's teaching her daughter to be one! What did she want you to do? Leave Nicky at the-"
But she never finished because Danny pressed his lips against hers. She blinked in surprise when he pulled back. "I find it... incredibly sexy when you defend me. Especially against my family. They can be ... a lot to handle sometimes."
"It's lucky then that I don't have any problem handling them. Not when it comes to your honor." She grinned and kissed him, pulling him down on top of her.
The problem with Nicky and Erin was temporarily forgotten.
