The second Frank had called her and told her to come to his house, her heart went a mile a minute. It was still beating insanely fast, and she tried to imagine Danny holding her hands or her arms, telling her to breathe.
She did her best not to snap at the boys when they continuously told her that the movie wasn't over.
"Frank, what's going on?" She tried to steel her voice, but it was hopeless. He hadn't told her Danny was okay, which meant he wasn't, which meant he might not be waiting for her like he promised he would be.
"First of all, Danny's not hurt."
She visibly relaxed, and the breath she didn't know she was holding came out of her in a big whoosh.
She wanted to scold Sean for saying it was like Sunday dinner, and she didn't appreciate the answer of except someone's missing.
"Boys, your dad's been arrested," Frank said calmly.
"For what?" All of Linda's anxiety came rushing back and settled in her bones.
"Possession of cocaine."
She laughed because this had to be some sort of sick joke. When no one else smiled, she exclaimed, "Oh, come on. That is ridiculous!"
Again, no one indicated they were pulling a cruel joke on her.
She sighed, shakily. "How?"
"Traffic stop. They found two kilos in his trunk."
"Okay, guys, you know what? I think it's time you go upstairs now," she didn't want her boys hearing this.
"Linda," Frank stopped the boys in there tracks. "I think they need to sit in on this."
"Boys, go upstairs," she ignored his request.
They started to move again when Frank tried to argue, "better they hear it now than at school. Boys-"
"I'm their Mom, me! Not you! Me!" She hadn't meant to explode like that. Calmer, she said, "boys, go upstairs. I'll come and get you in a bit."
They didn't make a move, waiting to see what Frank would say.
"Go!" She finally looked at them, pointing towards the direction of the stairs. Once they were upstairs, Linda turned back to Frank. "When I tell them something, that means I want them to do it right away. I'm their mother, and that means I have more say than you do; I don't care how authoritarian you are. You didn't birth them, I did. You're not raising them, I am. So what I say goes."
Frank opened his mouth to argue that it'd be better to tell them right here and now, but he never got the chance to.
"What the hell is happening?!" Linda yelled, feeling things starting to unravel. She was sure if she hadn't been hanging onto the chair for dear life, she would've fainted.
Danny? In jail? For possession? None of it made any sort of sense.
