The doorbell rang entirely too loudly for Linda's liking as she descended the stairs. She opened the door a crack and was surprised to see Henry. She rested her head against the door once it was wide open. "Henry. Hi. Come in."
Henry frowned as she yawned and stumbled a little bit. He followed her to the kitchen.
"You'll have to excuse me for not being the regular peppy hostess," Linda apologized as she sat at the table.
Danny placed the ice coffee in front of her, "she woke up nauseous with a migraine." He carded his fingers through her hair, and she smiled slightly.
"I'm sorry."
"It'll go away by one," she said a little dismissively.
"What brings you all the way out here, Pops?" Danny asked as he moved to the medicine cabinet.
"I've been thinking about you two recently. How much is it going to be to fix your car?"
"Too much. And we can't afford a new one. Even used cars are too expensive," Danny handed Linda an excedrin.
"So what are you going to do?"
"The boys can ride with the Keenans, and I guess one of us is going to have to be late a few days a week," Linda sighed in frustration. She felt the annoying tearful lump in her throat, and she wondered if it was from frustration over the fact that they were broke, or if it was from her headache. Probably it was the former.
"You can't do that."
"What else can we do? It's not like we can walk or take the subway."
"Maybe I can use your car, Danny, and you can use the squad car."
"They kinda frown on taking the cars home."
Linda sighed again, putting her hand on her forehead. "Then I don't know."
"You can use my car," Henry offered.
"Then what will you drive?"
"I won't be."
"Oh come on, Gramps. We can't take your car for the rest of our days," Danny declined the offer.
"Yes you can. I'm giving you my car. I... decided it was best for me—and everyone else on the road— to stop driving. I hate the idea, but it's for the best. And seeing as though I won't be using it anymore, I'm giving it to you."
"That's very sweet and generous of you, Henry, but we can't—"
"Yes you can, and you will." He cut off Linda and dropped his keys in front of her. "Trust me, Linda. You and the boys need this car far more than I do."
"Thank you, Henry." Linda stood and hugged him tightly. "I'm gonna make this up to you."
"You'll do nothing of the sort. Just make that shepherd's pie if yours Sunday, and we'll call it even."
Linda laughed a little, "deal."
