More time had passed, my dad wasn't able to come home for Christmas which bummed us out but we were able to call him which helped. He said he was going to try and be home for New Years. It was a nice Christmas and the presents we got were what we wanted or needed. The day after Christmas I took Emma ice skating. We were skating around the rink and I saw Steve across the street.
"Hey babysitter!" I shouted and he turned. He shook his head but walked over.
"Yeah red?" he replied as he got near.
"Just wanted to see if you'd respond to that and you did not disappoint."
"Glad to provide you with entertainment, you did save me a trip to your house though." He pulled something out from behind his back. "Merry Christmas."
I took the small package and looked at him "I didn't get you anything, I didn't know we were doing presents for each other."
"Don't worry about it, just open it."
I opened it carefully and inside was film for a camera. I had just run out of what film I still had and didn't get a chance yet to buy more. I had been running low before Christmas and saved the last of it for the holiday.
"Steve, I"
"Don't start that, I know how much you enjoy your camera and how you were running out. Besides, who else is going to be taking my picture while I play basketball next semester."
"Always turning everything to be about yourself, what a self centered ass."
He knew I was joking of course and he laughed at my words and smiled. This was us, we would tease or joke with each other. We had gotten closer over the past month and if I had been asked a year ago if I saw myself so close with Steve I would have laughed and said it would never happen.
"Thank you," I said and lightly kissed his cheek. "I should get back to Emma before we have to get home for dinner." He nodded then waved to her as she skated past.
By the time New Years came I had gotten over Scott completely and had been spending a lot more time with Steve. I think I was closer with him now than I was with Jonathan. Steve is currently over at my house. I am laying on the couch with my feet on Steve's lap while Emma was showing us her dance routine that she had done for a Christmas show. I had been sick when her school did the show so I couldn't make it. Steve just happened to be over right now so he was sort of forced to watch.
"Ho ho ho," a voice came from the door as it opened and Emma squealed, running to hug my dad.
I propped myself up on my elbows to be able to tilt my head over the side of the couch smiling as she jumped up and down in front of him. He had presents in his hands otherwise she would have jumped into his arms. She followed him as he came around to put them in the living room.
"Are you getting too old to greet your father?" he asked, then noticed Steve and I.
I got up shaking my head and hugged him after he put the presents down and we were jumped by Emma. She was very excited.
"Hello Steve," he said after letting go of the hug.
Steve got up from the couch to be polite, "Hey Mr. King" he replied.
"Rachel, can I talk to you?"
I followed him into the kitchen. "Let me see if I understand this, you didn't like Steve last year but began to tolerate him for Nancy because they were dating. But now, he's at our house almost weekly."
"I judged him too harshly when I first met him, he's actually a pretty nice guy. I'm sure mom told you about Scott and how Steve wouldn't let me just wallow in anger or tears."
