I don't know what time it was when I finally woke up, but my head was rising and falling with each breath Steve made. So it wasn't a dream, we did make it home. I slowly opened my eyes, I was facing toward the left side of bed and noticed that Emma was not in hers. I panicked softly but it was enough to wake Steve.
"What's wrong? Another nightmare?" His voice was deep and groggy.
"Emma's not in bed, I have to find her. I have to make sure she's safe," I reply.
I tried to get up but his arms tightened around me, did he not understand that my sister could be in danger and was needing me? Why is he preventing me from going to her?
"She's probably just eating downstairs with your family."
"You don't know that for sure, I need to know she's safe. To know Vecna didn't," my voice catches in my throat.
The visions coming back, the things Vecna showed me. All of my family dead, their bodies broken in this way or that, blood spattered. My eyes watered as I looked at Steve and laid my hand on his chest to make sure he was real. He was, my hand moved with his rising chest as he breathed in and out.
"I'm really here and your family is safe."
"I'm sorry," my voice breaking.
He took my hand into his, brought it up and gently kissed it. This was the worst thing we have ever gone through, sure the other times we fought things from the Upside Down we all have trauma but this time I just can't move past it. This was many more times worse.
"Don't apologize for having feelings and being human Rachel."
"You aren't breaking down, you're not losing control."
"I wasn't taken by Vecna, I wasn't shown hell like you were. Made to relive things of my past, you have gone through hell the past several days and I would be worried if you came out of it totally fine and normal."
He was right, if I didn't react like this I would worry too. I buried my head into him, he ran his hand along my back and side with one hand while the other held mine against his chest. A few moments of silence went by and the bedroom door opened. Emma quietly stepped inside as she figured we were still asleep.
"We're awake," Steve said.
"Oh good, I just forgot a jacket. There's some breakfast downstairs for you two, mom put it in the oven to keep it warm" Emma said.
"Thanks, why do you need a jacket?" I ask.
"Grandpa and I are going to see if any neighbors need help."
I nod my head, that was a good idea. There are bound to be a lot of people in Hawkins in need of help, I don't know if I personally was up to it yet knowing we had failed in preventing it all from happening but I was glad to see my family was going to do their part.
"Mom and nana are heading to the police station to see where they can help."
She got her jacket from the closet and left. After another moment Steve and I also left the room and went downstairs. My family were all heading for the door.
"I don't know how long we'll be gone but you both help yourselves to anything in the kitchen, breakfast is in the oven" my mom said before gently kissing my forehead.
They all left and I headed to the kitchen with Steve, we pulled the food out of the oven and ate quietly. My brain was beginning to wake up more, I poured some coffee and just held the warm mug in my hand, staring at its contents.
"I want to check on Max and Dustin" I said.
"Okay," Steve replied.
I put the mug down before heading to the door, Steve's voice stopped me right before his hand did. He gently grabbed my arm and I looked at him.
