When we arrived home from the honeymoon I had a stack of mail on the table, my parents must have brought it by. We had given them a key to keep an eye on the place for us while we were gone. We had a few plants that needed tending to, Steve and I got them a few months ago to make the place look nicer. We unpacked before even looking at the mail but when I noticed where they were from I immediately opened them all.
"Steve!" I called.
"Yeah?" he replied, coming to the dining room.
"I got into three schools, Georgia, New York and California."
"I told you, I said you would get into them and here we are."
I put my hands on his face and kissed him, he did indeed say that I would get into a number of schools. That if they couldn't see my extreme talent then they didn't deserve me. Now we have to decide where I should go. Where exactly we want to move to.
"California has a lot of options for work probably and I could maybe even get a part time job while I go to school" I said as we sat on the couch.
"Don't you worry about that, your only job is to focus on school. Leave the work to me, but I agree. I think Mr. Parker has mentioned he has a friend out there whose construction business is growing and is hiring more workers" Steve said.
"There is also the beach which has a beautiful upside."
"California then?"
"Yeah. Now for the tough part," I sighed softly. "We have to tell everyone."
We planned to tell our families first, so the following day we invited them over for dinner. My family wasn't too surprised because the mail was delivered there and they expected that it was good news. They were sad that we will be leaving but happy for us at the same time. Steve's dad points out that Steve should be going to college too so he could get a better job and hopes that Steve will realize it and also join me. Two days after that we had the kids over after school, they were happy for us but very much saddened at the news of us not being in Hawkins. We promised them that we'd come back for their graduation. We also told them that when we are settled in a place they can come and visit.
There were a lot of details that needed to be worked out, like our house. We decided on renting it, as it would bring in money and still be around for if we ever decide to move back to Hawkins. Charlie happened to be looking for a place so we offered him ours. With that taken care of we had begun to pack only what we absolutely needed, we didn't know where yet that we could live when we get there. It's not like I would be living on campus. Robin was our first choice for renting to but she actually got into the same school I did in California so she would be moving as well. She has a dorm room on campus but I have a feeling that once Steve and I find a place she will be spending her free time there.
Thanksgiving was rough this year, Steve and I were to be leaving the next day. We wanted to be moved and settled in a place before school starts in January. We had to split the day between our two families and wanted to make sure we spent plenty of time with both. I cried that night, it was tough to be leaving but I knew that we'd visit. The following morning we were met with a great surprise. The kids all played hooky from school to say goodbye.
"Did you really think we'd let you leave without saying goodbye?" Dustin said, hugging us.
"We didn't want all the tears," Steve replied.
"I'm going to miss you so much, who will we talk to about the boys now?" El asked.
"You can call me, once we get a place and number all set up we'll make sure to give it out to everyone. Besides you have each other," I replied.
