Jiyeon slurped her pack of artificial juice beside the vending machine, waiting for the boys in the restroom a few doors away. She asked herself what actually happens with the patients who don't recover from the injections.
Jiyeon knew a few people who didn't survive the test, how she knew? The people just disappeared. She doesn't know if they were monitored or randomly tested but when they couldn't handle the injection, the next day they were gone.
It made her curious, did they got transported elsewhere? Eliminated? Turned into mutants? he could never find out but that doesn't stop her to imagine wild things.
As her gaze turned to her right, she could see Minho walk down the hall. He had a bag in his back, showing that his shift has ended.
Her eyes shined as she saw him coming in her direction. Minho was looking down at his phone, seeing the messages he received while working.
"Lee!" Jiyeon shouted, startling the boy. His eyes jumped up surprised, almost dropping his phone as he watched the girl wave happily to him. Relieved that it was not one of his instructors, Minho went to the girl.
"Why alone?" he asked the girl looking around, searching for the boys who were normally by her side. "All in the restroom" she scoffed, showing her obvious angry face.
Minho nodded to its understanding, his eyes went down to her hands which held the juice box. He furrowed a brow, he can't remember having that allowed in the laboratory.
"These are prohibited here, you know that right?" he asked skeptically, pointing at the beverage. Confused Jiyeon looked down only to laugh then "These are artificial no worries, should pay more attention to your surroundings" she joked, tapping at the glass of the vending machine beside her, filled with only one type of juice.
Minho worked for a year already at the laboratory but never noticed the juices in the vending machine, or the machine as a whole. At the side he was able to see a scan screen, meaning they aren't for free.
"How do you pay?" he asked and looked back at the girl, she lifted her sleeve showing her tag band. Minho knew it, the most important item for the patients and scientists here.
"Some of my payment will be deducted no biggie, sadly the boys can't get themselves one" the girl sadly smiled, and Minho again just nodded to try and seem blunt about it. "You get a new injection, right? What is it this week?" Minho asked, unusually talkative for himself.
It was new for him to ask the questions instead of being asked, and it made him curious about how the patients live here. Jiyeon was for Minho a carefree person, someone who doesn't seem to suffer under the conditions.
Her smile faltered into an annoyed frown "Drugs" she stated with a cold voice, Minho became a shudder at the words. The drug tests were one of the things that terrified Minho in the laboratory.
Many drugs had side effects which always made Minho worried that people get trauma from them. Now that one of the few happy people in the building gets a drug, he was scared that she would change after the tests.
