Adelaide kept a tight grip on the handle of the jet.
Steve noticed her knuckles turning white and her breath hitch when they made a sharp turn. "Fear of heights?" He asked.
"My family doesn't have a good track record with planes." She said.
The plane started to tip and alarms at the front started to go off.
Adelaide gripped the handle tighter until the metal bent under her grip.
When the entire jet stopped with a hard drop, Clint opened the hanger door.
"We got to get back up there." Steve said as he ran past cars and debris.
They had just reached Grand Central Station when they all looked up to see a streak of blue opening into a hole in the sky letting through aliens of all sizes.
One of the big ones, like a whale in the sky, flew over them breaking the statue of Hermes.
"How does it stay up there?" Adelaide wondered when she could spot any propellers or anything else on its back other than armor and other aliens.
The other three looked at her.
"Never mind."
"Stark, are you seeing this?" Steve asked.
"Seeing. Still working on believing." Stark said. "Where's Banner? Has he shown up yet?"
"Banner?" Steve asked.
"Just keep me posted."
"We've got civilians still trapped up here." Steve said to the others who were also hiding behind a cab.
Everywhere around them there were explosions and people screaming and running.
"You think you can hold them off?" Steve asked them.
"Captain, it would be my genuine pleasure." Clint said.
Adelaide stood and threw a knife at an alien. She ran up and removed it from its face. She kicked the half dead one into a another and they both fell off the bridge.
Clint and Adelaide worked to get people out of cars and buses.
"Just like Budapest all over again." Natasha said to Clint.
"You and I remember Budapest very differently."
"You won't remember it at all if you're dead. Heads!" Adelaide yelled and fired her guns twice.
All around them lightning struck the aliens and Thor flew down to meet the rest of them.
"What's the story upstairs?" Steve asked him.
"The power surrounding the Cube is impenetrable." Thor said.
"Thor's right. We got to deal with these guys." Stark said over the comms. Everyone looked up but no one saw him.
"How do we do this?" Natasha looked at Steve.
"As a team." He told her.
"I have unfinished business with Loki." Thor said.
"Yeah?" Clint took a moment to look away from his arrow. "Well, get in line."
"Save it. Loki's going to keep this fight focused on us, and that's what we need. Without him these things could run wild. We got Stark up top. He's going to need us to..." Steve stopped talking and turned to face the approaching motorcycle.
A man with baggy close and dusty complexion got off and met them half way. "So, this all seems horrible."
"I've seen worse." Natasha spoke up.
"Sorry." Bruce said.
"No, we could use a little worse." Natasha assured him.
"Stark, we got him." Steve said.
"Banner?"
"Just like you said."
Tell him to suit up. I'm bringing the party to you." A small figure flew around the corner of a building with a destructive alien behind him.
"I don't see how that's a party." Natasha said.
Seeing how close it was coming, Adelaide suddenly realized just how big it was, and how hard it was to stop.
"Dr. Banner. Now might be a really good time for you to get angry." Steve told him.
"That's my secret Captain." Banner walked closer and closer to the approaching alien. "I'm always angry."
They all watched as he effortlessly outgrew his shirt and balled his green fist. Just in time his fist stopped the alien and Banner was pushed back only a few feet.
The serpent like body flew overhead and all the armor started coming off. Everyone ducked and Stark hit an open spot on its back with a missile.
"Guys." Natasha drew their attention to the hole in the sky.
"Call it, Captain." Stark said.
"All right, listen up. Until we can close that portal, our priority is containment. Barton I want you on that roof. Eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash."
"Can you give me a lift?" Clint asked.
"Better clench up, Legolas." Stark took Clint in the air with him and dropped him on the directed roof.
"Thor, you got to try and bottleneck that portal. Slow them down. You got the lightning. Light the bastards up."
Thor spun his hammer to gain momentum and followed orders.
"Agent Herrmann, can you find a way to close that portal?"
"I'll need a better look at it, but I'm sure I can."
"What do you need?" Steve asked.
"Time, a scientist, and a lift." Adelaide said.
"Alright."
"You and me, we stay here on the ground. We keep the fighting here. And Hulk...Smash."
