Natasha called Adelaide the second she got off the phone will Maria Hill.

They both ran through the hospital. Nick Fury had been shot. They ran inside and were directed to the OR where he was currently undergoing surgery.

"Is he gonna make it?" Natasha asked Steve, who had beaten them both there. He watched with his hands in his pockets.

"I don't know." Steve admitted.

They all watched the doctors working diligently on Fury's bullet wound. Not only has he been shot, but he had dried blood on his face showing that he had been beaten sometime before.

"Tell me about the shooter." Natasha demanded.

"He's fast. Strong. Had a metal arm." Steve said.

Adelaide refused to blink. Through the glass she saw the heart monitor, if she looked really hard, she could see her reflection. A horrified look on her face, Natasha saw it too. Adelaide knew one person with a metal arm who was equally as strong and fast as Steve. Someone equal to her training and strength.

Maria walked up next to her.

"Ballistics?" Natasha asked.

"Three slugs, no rifling. Completely untraceable." Maria said.

"Soviet-made." Adelaide guessed.

"Yeah." Maria looked at her.

Everyone time she thought her tears were gone, her vision blurred again. She hadn't cried in a long time. Not since she was a child in the Red Room.

"I need to take him." Hill said, joining Adelaide and Steve watching Natasha say goodbye.

Steve went to talk to Natasha.

Adelaide looked over to see Maria close her eyes. Adelaide wanted to say something, but nothing would have worked. No joke would lighten the mood, and no apologies could bring Fury back.

Natasha stormed out of the room and into the hall. Steve and Adelaide followed.

"Natasha!"

"Why was Fury in your apartment?"

Steve sighed and shrugged. "I don't know." He shook his head.

"Cap, they want you back at S.H.I.E.L.D." Rumlow said.

"Yeah, give me a second." Steve told him.

"They want you now." Rumlow insisted.

"Okay." Steve turned back to him, both of them losing their patience.

"You're a terrible liar." Natasha walked off.

"Let's go, Rogers." Adelaide started walking towards the S.T.R.I.K.E. team.

She would go back to headquarters and check on Rue. Just after Natasha called Adelaide, Rue had gotten a call to return to work.

When the elevator doors opened, Adelaide was met with Rumlow's S.T.R.I.K.E. and men from the upper levels and Steve Rogers.

Rumlow stood on the right side of the Captain, Adelaide took to the left.

"I'm sorry about what happened with Fury. It's messed up, what happened to him."

"Thank you." Steve told Rumlow.

Adelaide looked up at Steve. She realized he was looking past her. The man to her left was sweating heavily.

Adelaide silently inspected everyone in the elevator. Steve was the only other person to notice how heavily armed Rumlow's team was. Steve looked at her with a suspicious look. Was he estimating if she was about to attack.

The elevator stopped and let on three heavily armed men who took up what little space there was left.

Everyone of them were sectioned to their own groups while Steve and Adelaide stood in the middle.

"Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?" Steve said.

Adelaide was slowly starting to raise her hand before the guy in front of them drew his weapon. The man turned, throwing himself towards them.

Steve jumped out of the way, knocking Adelaide to the side.

A man took the shield from Steve and turned to Adelaide.

He ran at her with the shield, her back collided with the elevator wall.

She drew her knife and slashed at the guy's throat. She took the shield from his limp arm and waved it in the air, knocking a guy out with the metal surface.

Rumlow had Rogers pinned against the wall, an electric baton pressed to his back.

Adelaide kicked him in the chest, Rumlow went flying across the elevator.

Steve was finally able to free his arm from the magnetic pull against the wall.

"Whoa, big guy. I just want you to know, Cap, this isn't personal!" Rumlow charged with his batons ready.

Adelaide had finally taken down the rest of them when Steve threw Rumlow into the ceiling.

"It kind of feels personal."

Adelaide gave him back his shield. "No kidding." Adelaide agreed. Inside she was mentally scolding herself for not noticing it. When Rumlow brought up her previous work for Hydra, asking all the most suspicious questions.

Steve opened the elevator doors.

"Drop the shield and put your hands in the air!" An entire team had set up in the hall.

Steve whirled around, breaking the wires in the elevator.

"Oh, my god!" Adelaide screamed, covering her head as they all opened fire. "Now what, genius?" She stood, watching the city flash by as the elevator went free falling. She could feel her stomach rising to her throat just before the elevator screeched to a stop.

Steve opened the doors again. He quickly closed them.

"What's happening?"

"Give it up, Rogers. Get that door open!"

"Rogers?" Adelaide asked, watching him look out the window. "No, no, no, no."

"It's that or face them." He gestured between the glass and the door.

"You won't drop me. Would you?" She would rather face a dozen armed soldiers than perform an ultimate trust fall with someone she didn't trust.

Without saying anything he grabbed her and pulled them both out the window. Adelaide squeezed her eyes closed, holding back her screams.

The second they hit the ground Steve let go, forcing Adelaide to roll to a stop on her own. She let her arms fall from around her head and helped Steve up.

They ran to the garage, piling onto Steve's motorcycle.

"Stand down. Stand down." A pilot told them over the PA. "Repeat, stand down."

Steve was barely able to miss every bullet shot at them. He threw the shield, letting it fly at the jet and getting caught in one of the turbines.

Steve flipped the motorcycle, throwing them both on top of the jet.

Adelaide stayed low on the roof of the jet, trying not to fly off.

"We have to go." Steve yelled at her.

Adelaide shook her head, refusing to move. He grabbed her arm and jumped off onto the bridge with her. She screamed horrifically in his ear, even after they landed safely.
