The three former Hydra agents were able to intercept the duke on his visit to Vatican City.
As his guard closed the door to his limo, Adelaide threw him into the trunk. Rue took the drivers seat as James and Adelaide got into the back of the limo, taking a seat on either side of the duke.
"You know who we are?" Adelaide questioned. The duke gave a quick nod. "Good. Tell us where Strucker is." She demanded.
Rue drove them towards the mountains.
"You're gonna threaten me in the holy city?"
"Not even God will save you here." Adelaide rested her hand on her gun.
The soldier used his metal arm to hold a threatening grip on the duke's collar. He let out a shaky breath before he cracked.
"He's in Bulgaria. In a small facility just outside Sofia." He blurted out, hoping the soldier would loosen his grip.
"Okay." Adelaide said. "Alright." She gave a firmer voice and pushed his hand off the shirt. "You got a phone, sir?" He held it up with shaking hands.
She sent a quick text to Strucker, telling him to meet in Sofia to discuss the duke's fears about the plan. The duke reaches for his phone just before Adelaide crushed it in her hand.
"That shit rots your brain." She threw him out of the car and gave Rue the directions to Sofia.
In the back of the limo Adelaide made herself comfortable. Bucky stared at her waiting for her to notice. He cleared his throat.
Adelaide looked over only to find his eyes pointing up front. Adelaide shook her head. He wanted her to talk to Rue about her past.
"I'm gonna sleep." Adelaide turned towards the window.
It became silent in the car except for the quiet music Rue had playing on the radio. Adelaide looked across from her to see James fast asleep. His breathing was heavy and his eyes flickered under his eyelids. He was having a nightmare.
"You guys awake?" Rue called back to them. "We're pulling into the city."
Adelaide almost didn't want to wake James he looked very peaceful. When she tapped his shoulder he swung his metal arm her way and she fell to the floor to avoid it. Once he saw they were still in the limo he calmed down and apologized.
Once they stopped outside of St. Alexander Cathedral the two got out of the back.
"You should stay in the limo." Adelaide told Bucky.
"You're going to need my help." He insisted.
Adelaide thought about it. Even though his mind was unstable, Rue wasn't able to take on a super soldier and Adelaide couldn't hold off both Scylla and Atlas at once. And she knew they'd both be here.
"Okay, okay. Strucker should be waiting in the-" Adelaide was cut short when they all felt the heat of fire at their backs.
Behind them the Cathedral had been bombed and exploded, throwing stone and debris in every direction. While they were distracted James was thrown forward by a direct punch to the back.
Adelaide turned around just in time to get thrown into the limo.
"Find Strucker." Adelaide told Rue with a flimsy voice. Rue ran toward the burning fire inside the cathedral in hopes of finding her target.
Adelaide got up to face her sister. They were almost evenly matched while Atlas and the soldier were occupying each other. They both knew this had to end one way or another.
Before one of them could attack they both heard the same cry. "Mom!" A young girl, almost 14 was stuck under a block of stone that had fallen in the street. Both her legs were trapped and blood dripped down the side of her face as she searched for her mother.
Both Adelaide and Gerda ran towards the girl.
Before Adelaide could make it she was thrown to the side by a force like a moving brick wall. Atlas stood over her, watching her attempt to get up.
She watched with blurry vision as Gerda strained against the weight of the stone debris. She would never be able to lift it alone.
"You have no idea what we went through because of you... for him." Atlas sneered down at her with disgust and blame. He grabbed her by her throat and lifted her weak body off the ground. "You were supposed to come back!" He slammed her body in the pavement.
"Let go of her." James ran against Atlas, forcing him to the ground. He began to repeatedly punch Atlas until he could no longer move.
"James." Adelaide got to her knees, holding her side as she looked at Gerda struggling. The Winter Soldier programming was taking over his mind but that girl needed to get to a hospital. "Bucky!" Adelaide grabbed his wrist before he could land another punch.
She threw him off Atlas and stood between them. Adelaide grabbed a brick next to her foot just as the soldier began to charge her. With enough force she swung the brick at his face and knocked him out.
With both men down she was able to crawl over to Gerda. "It's okay." She assured the teenager. Together they lifted to weight of the stone and the girl clawed her way away from the two of them.
Adelaide fell to the ground and Gerda kept her head from hitting the ground.
