They all rode in a car, the only sound being the quiet radio and Rue giving directions.
"I'll call my friends at the airport. Let them know we're coming." Mace said.
Adelaide watched him pull out his phone. "No, you're driving. Let me." She leaned forward, requesting his cell phone.
Mace reluctantly handed it back to her. Adelaide rolled down her window and threw the phone out onto the road.
"What the hell!" Mace raised his voice, looking at her in the mirror.
"HYDRA can track our phones." Adelaide said.
Mace huffed, continuing to drive. "You know littering is illegal, right?" He said.
Adelaide rolled her eyes as if that was the worst she's ever done.
They pulled over and spent the night in a run down motel. Adelaide and Rue took the bed closest to the window and the boys took the other bed, a single pillow between them.
Adelaide sat on the curb just outside their room. It was cold and dark but the street lights were enough she could see the parking lot and the fluorescent lighting of the motel sign gave the area a red glow.
"What you're doing isn't enough." A voice spoke.
Adelaide jumped up, pressing the figure up against the wall and holding a knife to her throat. Scylla looked down at her with calm eyes.
Adelaide stepped back, putting the knife away and sitting back on the curb. "I'm doing the best I can." She watched the cars zip by on the highway, all of them ignoring the motel and the two girls outside.
"They're not gonna stop, Heidi." The assassin sat next to the hero. For everything they had against each other, that didn't change the complicity of their lives, it didn't make it easier to hate each other.
"I know, but if the others find out I don't know what'll happen. They all just think I'm a former HYDRA agent." She wasn't just worried about the people in the motel room behind her. She cared what everyone in the world thought.
"The only way to really make them stop coming after you, is to get rid of HYDRA for good. But start small. There's a duke in Spain celebrating his 70th birthday, HYDRA will be there." Scylla looked at the girl next to her. Baron von Strucker to be exact. Take your little Avengers if you want to draw attention."
"They'd question how I know this." Adelaide shook her head.
"Tell them you have an old friend who invited you." Scylla said. "I'll be there, of course. I won't be able to help you once you're in." Scylla stood up. She was beginning to head to the shadows but Adelaide spoke up.
"Greta..." Adelaide turned her shoulders, looking back at the older woman. She watched Scylla stop. "I missed you."
"I missed you, too, Heidi."
Adelaide heard the door to the motel room opening and stood up. Scylla had disappeared and the Winter Soldier walked out.
"Couldn't sleep?" He asked, looking towards the shadow, trying to find what Adelaide was staring at.
"Same as you, I guess." Adelaide shrugged, finally looking at him.
"I remember you." He said.
"I would hope so. You tried to kill me. Multiple times." Adelaide pointed out.
"No. Worse memories... in HYDRA. Sometimes it's you and sometimes it's someone who looks like you." He explained.
"Memories get mixed up." She shrugged. She knew it was more than that, but he didn't need to. "I think we should go to Spain." Adelaide said.
"What's in Spain?" He asked.
"Baron von Strucker. If we want HYDRA to stop finding us, we need to destroy all of it." Adelaide explained. "He'll be at a party."
"Shouldn't you be calling the Avengers for this sort of thing?" He put his hands in his pockets, his shaggy hair beginning to fall over his eyes.
"They draw too much attention." She noticed that without any weapons or HYDRA's control, the Winter Soldier was just another victim.
In the morning they at sat in the room eating bagels and drinking cold coffee from the motel.
"If we go to Spain everyone will recognize us." Mace said.
"Only one of us is a criminal." Rue said from the edge of the bed she was sitting on. Bucky caught her stare.
"If we go we'll have to leave right away. And we can't exactly fly public airlines." Adelaide pointed out.
"Maybe if you hadn't thrown my phone out the window, we wouldn't have to worry about that."
"There's a payphone in the lobby. You and Barnes go get us a plane, Rue and I will be back." Adelaide stood and put her jacket on.
"And where are you going?"
"Shopping?" Adelaide shrugged and left with Rue and the car.
Mace and Bucky went to the lobby and found enough coins to make one call. "Hey, Saul." Mace spoke into the phone.
Bucky watched the lobby. It was mostly empty except for an elder couple and a small family that was still trying to get a room. He didn't know what to do to make himself look less suspicious.
The girls walked in and walked over to them. Mace finished up the call and announced that they had a jet to Spain.
