Chapter 38: First Case

Y/N'S POV

My heart's racing, could feel it beating hastily non-stop through my thick clothing. Though, I should worry more if it stopped. 

Fukuzawa: I'm glad you finally approached me, Y/N. I truly believe that you would be a great addition to our organization. 

"Really? Oh, you don't know how happy this makes me. Thank you so much, President" I smiled after quietly sighing in relief.

Fukuzawa: Would you like to assist Dazai and Atsushi on the case I assigned them for today?

"I'd be delighted to, thank you again" I bowed and let myself out of his office.

My first case! I could barely contain myself, and to top that off, my hair is literally so lustrous right now. 

Atsushi: Y/N, hey. Did you just come from the president's office?

"Yep! He told me I'm working a case with you today, isn't it exciting, Atsushi!" I could feel my smile reach up to my eyes, if that saying was true. 

Atsushi: That's great news! Shall we go tell Dazai? 

"Yes, though I'll only be observing for now. Don't worry, I won't get in the way of your work" 

Atsushi: I doubt that you'll mess up, you did spend time working for Nakahara Chuuya-san in the Port Mafia.

"Thanks Atsushi. Even if it was brief, I learned a lot and enjoyed it too since he's surprisingly a warmhearted person"

Dazai: Who's a warmhearted person?

He appeared out of nowhere. Sometimes I think he mysteriously finds the perfect time just to make fun of my former mentor. 

Atsushi: Chuuya-san, we were just talkin-

Dazai: Eurgh, I think you mistook him for another Chuuya, don't you think?

"No, he is indeed a thoughtful person despite his occupation" 

Dazai: My skin crawls with the sound of his name being mentioned. Anyways, you ready to go, Atsushi-kun?

Atsushi: Actually, Y/N is coming too. She was assigned to assist on this case  according to the president.

Dazai: Amazing, we get to spe-

I quickly placed my hand on Dazai's mouth without thinking, no one knows we're together yet and I didn't want them to find out like this. Also, I had no idea how to tell people.

"Y-yeah! So you could teach me, right?" I awkwardly tried to fix the situation which obviously gave us away. Luckily, Atsushi is the type to be naive around these kind of things.

Atsushi: Well, Dazai-san is a great mentor. I'm sure you'll get the hang of working here in no time!

"Yep! Thanks, Atsushi" I smiled and walked out of the building, thinking about how careless Dazai is; there's no doubt that he'll accidentally slip up and reveal us.

Dazai: Y/N, wait up!

"Are you an idiot? What'll you do if Atsushi finds out?" I whispered angrily after seeing him run out after me.

Dazai: Hm? Oh, do you wish to keep it a secret, Y/N?

"..maybe.. just for now? I'm new so it might be a bigger deal than we think"

Dazai: You're right. By letting people know, it's like giving them my one weakness.

"Sh-shut up"

I don't know much about it but hearing him call me his weakness really gave me butterflies. Is it really a good idea to work here alongside Dazai?

Dazai: We can't let anyone find out because the people after me would use you to get me.

"like a bait?"

Dazai: Mhm, and I'd fall for it everytime 'cause I absolutely can't risk you getting hurt.

"I'm fine. I'm not a baby"

Dazai: Well, you're my ba-

"S-SO, where's this mission taking place, huh?" I yelled without second thoughts. This idiot! Doing this is probably not good for my heart but.. I kinda like it.
