"I don't find myself spending all my time at the ball

"I don't find myself spending all my time at the ball. I have kids to take care of and I'm simply not going to waste my time sweating on the dance floor." I walked between Jo and Meg as they push me to the dress store. "And you guys already got me a dress for the last one!"

"If I'm going, you're going. Kids or not, you need to live some. You're older than us and act like an old lady already." Jo argued.

I rolled my eyes. "This is unethical."

"Just come with us! Ray and Ellie already said they'll watch them." Meg chimes in.

I groan. "Only because they want me to go too. I understand my boundaries, why can't they do the same?"

"They just want you to have fun."

"Well, I have fun with my kids."

"Alex is even going!"

"One, he doesn't look after the kids unless I'm there and two, he is going because he is lonely and hopes a girl will fancy him. I am trying to live life."

"In a house that you'll never leave? Very unlike the definition of life to me."

We went into the dress shop and that is where I knew it was over. I was going wether I liked it or not. I also knew Lincoln would force me to go. He always wanted to be the "boss" when I was gone. He was so used to it before living with me. I guess he had missed it. Ashton just wants me and Laurie to hang out more. I love staying with the kids, but that isn't why I don't want to go. It's because of Laurie. I can't looked at him without wanting to tell him how I feel. These feelings could ruin our friendship and he may not feel the same. I seen the way he looked at Jo. You can't fake that stuff.

They pushed me to the dresses and we began searching. It was a winter ball, so I would try to get extra layers. I also wouldn't want to get the same dress I got last time, so most definitely not the same color. Even though I didn't want to go, I had to look good for when I did. I wasn't getting out of this either way.

Once we all had dresses picked out, we did our fashion show after picking out the perfect dress. Marmee had taken Amy and Beth a day earlier. She had thought us older girls could use a day alone. First Jo went in and came out in her normal looking dress. She had some matching shoes, making her look slightly taller. She did dramatic poses, making both me and Meg to laugh.

After Jo, Meg went in and came out in what seemed like the perfect dress. She twirled around a bit, showing it off for all to see. But I knew she wanted to impress one person and one person only. His name was John Brooke. He was the man she danced with so happily at the first ball of the year. She seemed to taken a liking to him and everyone noticed it. She wouldn't stop speaking about him after that. I was happy for her. She was beautiful and I could tell she was doing it for herself and not for others. It was one of the reasons why I liked her so much. She would show me some of her play writes and act them out for me. I adored her talent and hoped she got far.
