I walked inside my fathers room to clean when I seen Ellie. She sat beside the window and read a book. She was so focused that she hadn't noticed me. I cleared my throat and she jumped and looked at me. "Oh dear, I am sorry."
I shook my head. "No need to be sorry. I am just here to clean. I thought you went out with father." I went further into the room and sat down on the edge of the bed, looking at Ellie as she closed the book and turned towards me.
"I was supposed to but I decided to stay home."
"Are you feeling ill?"
She shook her head and smiled. "Oh no. I just wanted to spend more time with Alex but he went to take Ashton and Lincoln for ice cream."
"Ah yes. He had told me he was going to do that. He was going to take Annemarie too but she feel asleep. She sleeps so soundly sometimes."
Ellie smiled and looked at the ground. I studied her for a moment. "Is something on your mind?"
She sighed and looked at me. "You father has insisted we marry soon before you leave but I am not sure I am ready. I would much rather wait than rush it."
"He does know we plan on visiting more than we should, right?"
She nodded. "I told him that. He is just scared you guys won't be able to make it."
"Oh I will. I promise. I wouldn't miss it for the world."
She smiled. "I know you wouldn't, but you'll be very busy and I wouldn't want to keep you from work."
I shook my head. "Don't be silly. I will be there, we all will. Tell father I said that and he should be alright. I am happy you want to take it slow. Father tends to get overwhelmed."
"He is a very complicated man in which I have fallen in love with."
I smiled. "I don't tell you this much but I didn't think I could see my father with anyone else but my mother until you came along."
"You mean it?"
I nodded. "I know the beginning of it all was very dramatic but I am happy you both found each other. I am not sure I would have fallen in love with Alex. At the time I thought so but now I know."
"It was all a lot, but I am delighted to have you as my daughter in law. Alex cares for you and those kids more than anything."
I smiled. "I do hope to see him have some of his own. He would be a wonderful father."
"If you told him that he would make sure to find a wife in Paris."
I laughed. "He would fish for compliments. He always does that."
She laughed with me and nodded. "He is a very odd one, isn't he?"
I nodded and looked at her. "If you don't mind me asking, what was Alex's father like? He had told me some details but nothing that seemed to stick out."
