My throat is dry and my eyes are still heavy when I slowly lift myself up to sit up.
Confused, I look around the dark room. It's completely silent, I can't even hear myself breathing.
Clem lifts her head from her spot at the foot of the bed. She stares for just a few seconds before she drops her head and goes back to sleep.
I frown, wondering why I'm awake right now. Maybe it was a nightmare. I think I'd remember it if it managed to wake me up, but maybe not.
I glance at the window right beside me. My bed is up against it so I have a nice view of the outside. It's open a little bit and the more I concentrate, the more sounds I can hear from outside.
I can hear the leaves shuffling along with the breeze, an owl, and what sounds like someone walking.
I perk up and lean closer to the window, listening closer. I squint at the wall, recognizing the patters of someone clearly walking along the cabin.
It doesn't match Grey's stepping pattern. His are a little slow and kind of heavy. He doesn't drag his feet either.
Grey isn't outside.
Very slowly, I reach over to pick Clem up. She doesn't meow at me like she normally does which is a relief.
I fear I'm making too much noise while I get out of bed, but the walking outside only pauses for just a moment before continuing.
I hurry out of the room and down the hall to Grey's room. I left my door open just like him. It makes it easy to simply walk into his room and up to the bed.
I gently set Clem down on the mattress, she collapses immediately to go back to bed. I shake my head at her.
Now is not the time!
Grey's back is to me, so I reach out to gently set my hand on his shoulder. "Grey," I whisper. His window is closed, so it's easier to make noise. "Grey," I call again, gently shaking his shoulder.
He hums at me, low and slow. With a deep sigh, he rolls over onto his back and squints at me. "Yeah, honey?" Greyson answers, bringing his hand to his face to rub his eye. "You have a nightmare?" He asks. He's already sitting up to reach over and grab me.
Grey tugs me over to get on the bed with him, but I won't let him lay me down. "Someone's outside." I whisper, wondering how long they've been out there.
His eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Hm?"
"I can hear someone outside." I explain. "Someone is outside my window."
"What do you mean?" Greyson questions, pushing himself to sit up. "You can hear someone? Like, talking?"
"Walking around." I correct. But I did hear someone clear their throat.
"It's probably just a critter, honey." He shakes his head to dismiss it. "Come here." He beckons me to lay down.
I huff at him. "No," I argue. "I can hear the walking patterns. It sounds like multiple." I explain, a little frantic to get him to believe me.
I didn't lock the door before I went to bed. I was in the living room watching tv when Grey went to bed.
He told me to lock the door when I go to bed but I forgot about it.
I got up to my room before I realized it. I would've gone back down, but Clem was sleeping on my chest. I couldn't move her, it's against the law.
Greyson, thankfully, looks like he believes me. "Okay," He nods and starts getting out of bed. I watch him slip shoes and a jacket on, swiping his knife from the desk. "Stay here, Soph. I'll be back." He firmly tells me, looking more awake now.
