I gawked vacantly at both the bouquets kept on the table of my lounge room. One was a posy of red roses along with a card whilst the other was a bunch of red lilies, my favourite. The fragrance of them jogged my memory of the former times, of my college days. The boys used to leave lilies at my desk accompanied by a box of chocolates, to have me date them.
Poor them!
I couldn't bring myself to like anyone, instead, I fell for a star who stayed closer, for a bit, completely forgetting, stars are to be admired from afar.
My solitary heed was on the prolonged, velvety red petals. They were enchanting. After so long I was given a bunch of them. An involuntary placid smile appeared on my face.
There was a reason I preferred lilies over roses. Their beauty was not hindered by the still thorns who tend to hurt everybody. On the flip side, Roses' beauty comes with a price.
"Good Morning, Mrs. Kohli." I heard Liza.
"Morning." My eyes were riveted to those beloved blossoms.
"This one was brought by a courier guy." She au courant me pointing to the lilies.
"And this one..." She was about to apprise me of who sent me those roses when I horn in, "I know who sent those. Keep them in a vase there." After taking out the card from the bunch of roses, I pointed to the vase kept on a cabinet in the corner of the room. I wasn't genned up about the sender of the lilies but was not at all mystified over who had sent those roses. Moreover, I didn't want to notice them the first thing after I entered the house.
"And what about those?" She was about to touch the tender petals of my lilies but my act of picking it up was rathe.
"I will take care of them." Responding to her, I took those lovelies with me.
There were a few things I was possessive of; lilies were one of them. An inane grin was ingrained on my lips when I was putting the flowers in the vase, kept on the bedside bureau of my bedroom. I deliberated about who sent me those before my eyes caught the glimpse of a black card.
I took a gander at the card of the roses first. As envisaged, it was from Vidyut. The card had the following statement engraved over it,
'All the best, wifey.
Yours
Vidyut'
Vidyut was aware with the fact that I didn't join the head branch, yet, he didn't call me, only sent me a bouquet with a card of wishes. There was no point in cajoling my brain over my expectations because I was tired of it. I was stopping myself from expecting anymore.
Vidyut would always bring roses for me. Time and again I had reminded him I loved Lilies but either he never paid attention, or even if he did, he didn't care.
I remembered our conversation when we were on a date to celebrate our third-month wedding anniversary. We were at the beach barefooted. Cold Water splashing on our feet.
"Why Roses?" I had asked, wanting to know the reason behind him giving me the same, over and over again.
"It's the symbol of love and I want you and the world to know how much I love you. All I am doing is for you." He left a chaste kiss on my forehead making me blush. After a few moments, I stared at the sundown. The sky was laced with pink, red sheets.
"But I love Lilies," I confessed for the third time, hoping he would have his ears on my words. No reply was received though. A little later I heard him say, "Did you say anything?"
